This community, his former home for half a century, was profoundly shocked Saturday morning when a telegram came from Naravisa, N.M., announcing the suddend and unexpected death of Otto VANGAASBECK, the day before. That morning Dr. GEPHART had received a letter from Otto dated December 15th, pertaining to business. The day before Fred HARWOOD had received a letter from his daughter, Mrs. Lucy BRUTON, saying all were well in New Mexico. It was feared some accident might have happened him. Wondering, the relatives and friend here awaited the arrival of the body Monday morning when it came accompanied by the mourning wife, daughter Carrie and two smaller children. The particulars of his death were soon told. He and his daughter Carrie and Jas. GREEN his son-in-law, had driven Thursday from their homesteads to Naravisa, thirty miles away, to do some trading and remained overnight. Friday morning Otto went to the stable to feed the horses, when he was attacked by severe pains in his arms and body. He was taken at once to the liveryman's home near by and a physician was called. Then minutes after the doctor called, and in less than half an hour after he was stricken death came to Otto as he sat on the edge of the bed, at 7:20 a.m. The doctor pronounced it neuralgia of the heart. he'd had a slight, similar attack at home a few days before, but it soon passed away, and feeling hearty and well otherwise he paid little attention to it. Otto VANGAASBEEK was born in Columbus, Wisconsin, June 29, 1855. Died in Naravisa, New Mexico, December 15, 1909, aged 54 years, 5 months and 18 days. June 29, 1856, the very day that Ottoe was one year old, his father, Uncle George VANGAASBEEK, moving his family to Kansas, located on a claim in the forks of the Cedar creeks in Jefferson county. There Otto grew to manhood and in that vicinity he lived, married and raised a family of eleven children. Last spring he moved to New Mexico where he homesteaded a couple quarters of government land, which he was improving and was well satisfied in that new country. March 1, 1876 Otto VANGAASBEEK was married to Miss Alice B. BRUNTZ. The wife and eleven children survive him: Mrs. Mable GREEN, of Hayden, N.M., George of Easton, KS., Frank of Springfield, Mo., Charley, Mrs. Abbie STEVENS, Joh, Hary and Grover of Valley Falls, Carrie, Otto and Cecil with their mother. All were present at the funeral except Mabel and Frank. The body lay at the home of his sister, Mrs. George McNORTON Monday and Tuesday until the burial hour. The funeral was held from the Christian church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. WILSON officiating int he presences of many friends, and the body laid to rest in Farrar cemetery in the family lot not far from the graves of his father and mother, over in Rose Hill cemetery.
