VanGaasbeck, widow of the late Otto VanGaasbeck, died last Friday, April 4, 1919, at Christ's hospital, Topeka, Kansas, where she was taken a few day before for treatment for heart and kidney trouble. Death was due to enlargement of the heart, after an illness of one year. Alice B. Bruntz was born May 16, 1858 in Platte County, Missouri. When she was five years old, Alice moved with her parents to Valley Falls, then Grasshopper Falls, Kansas, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Otto VanGaasbeck March 1, 1876. To this union were born 12 children, four daughters and eight sons, ten of whom survive, and seven of whom were present at the funeral: Mrs. Maybelle Green, Frank M., and John of Valley Falls, George and wife of Easton, Mrs. Abbie Stevens of Hamburg, Iowa, Harry and wife of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Charley and wife of Pueblo, Colo. Mrs. Carrie Aycock of Los Angeles, Calif., on account of sickness and Grover and Cecil, who are in the U. S. Navy were unable to attend the funeral. Lizzie died in infancy thirty years ago, and Otto died in Los Angeles, Calif., four years ago. Her brothers and sisters surviving are George Bruntz of Council Grove, Kansas and James of St. Louis; Mrs. James Huff, Mrs. H. G. Miller, and Miss Missouri Bruntz, of Valley Falls. In the spring of 1909, the family moved to near Naravisa, New Mexico, where the husband and father died suddenly on December 6, 1909. He and James Green who lived out there then had driven 20 miles to the town for lumber and supplies. Next morning at 4:00 o'clock Jim was awakened by Otto complaining of a severe pain in his elbow, and thirty minutes later he was dead with neuralgia of the heart. In 1912, Mrs. VanGaasbeck and Carrie, moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where the sons, Grover, who was in the navy before the war, Cecil and Otto joined them. Otto dying there. In the fall of 1918 Mrs. Vangaasbeck returned to Valley Falls to live with her children, owing to her continued poor health she spent the winter with Mr. And Mrs. Jas. Green, and until taken to the hospital at Topeka where death relieved her of all suffering at the age of 60 years, 10 months and 18 days. She was a member of the Nazareen church and lived a faithful Christian to the end. Monday morning the body was brought to Valley Falls for the funeral, which was held from the Christian church at 11:00 o'clock, Rev. Chas. H. Kiimball conducting the services in the presence of the several children, other relatives and friends. The burial was in the Farrar cemetery by the side of husband and father.
