Ketchum Mar 16, 2007 Owen ended his life's work on March 15, 2007, at the Horizon Hospice House in Billings, finally yielding to years of hard work, blizzards, hail storms and drought. Utilizing his skills as a cowboy, carpenter, plumber, mechanic and barber in his final days, he was still working hard to prepare a special place for himself and his family as well as all the people he has cared for. His father, Earl, and mother Vera welcomed him, the third of 10 children, into this world on Sept. 20, 1914, in Augusta, Wis. In 1918, the family moved to a ranch 25 miles south of Plevna. Growing up, working on the ranch and taking care of the younger brothers and sisters took priority over school. He was able to complete eight years either walking or riding a horse in order to attend. Paying jobs were scarce in those days; he did what he could at home and working for neighbors. He secured a job working for the CCC for approximately one year. His hard work was rewarded as the Captain of the CCC in a recommendation letter dated 4-11-36 that stated: "[Owen] has shown himself to be a steady, reliable young man. He has paid special attention to the filing of cross-cut saws, and has gained considerable proficiency at the work. I gladly recommend him to anyone wanting a good steady worker." He spent a few summers working as a carpenter and plumber in Yellowstone Park. In the spring of 1936, he was returning to work in the park when he stopped over in Billings to visit a neighbor from Plevna who was going to school at Rocky Polytechnic. She happened to be rooming with a girl from the Molt area whose dad needed a good hand. Owen then proceeded out to Molt, where he met that girl's dad, Jess Keefer. The daughter, Ethel, proved to be a good match for Owen and they were married June 4, 1937. They lived on the ranch until Owen entered military service in Dec 1944. His "Separation Qualification Record" states "performed duties in Saipan, Marianas Islands, with the 864th Antiaircraft Gun Batallion, for ten months. Cut hair of military personnel. Shaped neck line with comb and scissors and shaved neck. Trimmed hair to proper length." After discharge October 1946, Owen and Ethel moved to Big Fork on the Flathead Lake where they operated a cafe. In 1948, they moved to Park City, where Owen returned to ranch life working with his father in-law, Jess. During this time in Park City, their three children, Sam, Betty and Warren, were born. Owen moved the family to the Molt area in 1959 in order to be closer to the ranch work. He served on the school boards in Molt and Rapelje. He was also a life member of Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star. Owen never left a piece of machinery un-repaired, a fence line un-mended, a field unplowed, the cows not milked or fed and he NEVER put a horse up wet. The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care he received from the wonderful staff and volunteers at Valley Health and Rehab, West Park Village, Big Sky Hospice, the Horizon Hospice House and a special thanks to Dr Purcell and Diane Jones for directing him and the family through many difficult health issues with very careful and measured guidance. Surviving are his wife, Ethel of Billings; sons Sam (Gail) Ketchum of Broadview, Warren (Lynn) Ketchum of Billings; and daughter Betty (Harold) Blattie of Helena, grandchildren Tricia (Mark) Rossmeier, Jacque (John) Whims, Kyle (Tanya) Ketchum, Tim (Roni) Blattie, Michael Blattie, Chris (Jill) Blattie, Matt Blattie, Tyler (Lori) Ketchum; great-grandchildren Annisa and Alex Whims, Mackenzie and Camron Ketchum, Breanna and Isabella Blattie, Talle and Taylor Ketchum. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Molt Congregational Church; Big Sky Hospice, 123 S. 27th, Billings; or Horizon Hospice House, 1019 Neptune, Billings MT 59105. Services will be held Monday, March 19, at 1 p.m., at Smith Funeral Chapel, 304 34th St. West, Billings. Viewing prior to service.
