Johnson, 70, formerly of Forsyth deed Tuesday July 12, 1994, in Havre, MT. Owen was born Sept. 25, 1923, in Miles City, MT., the son of Standish and Myrtle Merchant Johnson. He attended school at Stacey and Forsyth Hogh School graduating in 1942. On Dec. 7, 1946, Owen married Laverne Benner in Billings, MT. Together they had five daughters, Cherri, Penni, Dianna, Patricia, and Susan. Along with these he took in many strays and raised them as his own. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who will be sadly missed by many. Owen was one of the last great cowboys who lived by the handshake and his word. When he gave his word, it was gospel. Owen was a man of vision and purpose who had endless patience. He taught us how to be strong, get along, and stand alone. No matter how big or small your problem, he always had the time and understanding to help put things into perspective. His range spanned from Rapid City to the Missouri Breaks. Owen gathered wild horses and ran cattle in the company of his father Standish, his brother Roy and many friends. His church was the wide-open spaces and the end-less sky. His saddle was his home, and the horse was his friend. Owen was one of the founding members of the Forsyth Horse Show, serving on the Board for 25 years and a member of the Miles City Elks Lodge for 37 years. He was physically active until the day he died. He is survived by his wife Vernie of Miles City, his five daughters. Cherri Potts of Forsyth, Mont.; Penni Berg of Colstrip, MT.; Dianna Heathman of Miles City, MT., Patricia Rose of Hathaway, MT.; and Susan Morgan of Chinook, MT.; 13 grandkids; 3 great-grandchildren; and numerous other children that called him grandpa. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 1994, at the Beal's Mortuary Chapel in Forsyth. Pallbearers were David Potts, Charlie Meier, Bill Rose, Harlan Morgan, Pat Nees and Ron Benner. Interment will follow in the Forsyth Cemetery, Forsyth, MT. Beals Mortuary in Forsyth is in charge of the arrangements.
