Barr, 75, of 604 E. 15th St. S., a resident of Newton since 1974 and a longtime farmer in the Kellogg and Reasnor communities, died Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Des Moines Mercy Hospital and Medical Center following a heart attack. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the Reese Funeral Home after noon today and visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church in Newton or the Kellogg Museum will be accepted. Survivors are his wife, Esther; two sons, James of Pella and Ronald of Victor, Mont.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, John of Grinnell and Floyd and Joseph Franklin, both of Kellogg; and two sisters, Ida Weaver of Grinnell and Laurine Woortendyke of Richton Park, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Lavon Dunkle, a brother, Chester Barr, and an infant sister, Bertha Mae Barr. Mr. Barr was a member of the Newton First United Methodist Church, a former member of the Monroe Community School Board of Education, 4-H Boys' leader, Kellogg and Reasnor United Methodist Church boards and the National Farmers Organization and Farm Bureau. He enjoyed fishing. He had farmed for 16 years near Kellogg and 25 years near Reasnor and been a Newton Community School District bus driver. The son of Samuel and Ethel Milligan Barr, he was born Nov. 17, 1918 in Newburg and was a 1938 graduate of Kellogg High School.
