Read More	Patricia Ann Carney, age 5, who lived on her parent's farm a mile south of Fenton, was instantly killed last Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., by the accidental discharge of a 12-gauge shotgun in the hands of her brother, Hugh Carney Jr. The Carney family had moved March 1, from a farm southwest of Whittemore to the Fenton farm which they bought. Patricia Ann had the whooping cough and couldn't be taken away from home because of her illness. The parents had to go to Emmetsburg Friday on business pertaining to the sale of the Whittemore farm they had moved from. Hugh Jr., age 12, stayed home from school to be with Patricia Ann. The children were constant companions and it was thought the time would be less tedious for Patricia if Hugh was there to play with her, rather than one of the older children. The children were alone at the time of the accident and after the tragedy, the brother was too shocked to tell exactly what had happen. The gun had been in the barn, but someone had brought it to the house. Whether it was loaded then or later is not known. The parents knew of only one shell and they did not think it was in the gun. Patricia was sitting on the dining room floor playing with her dolls and Hugh was playing with the gun, when it suddenly discharged. The blast struck the little girl in the chest. Appalled at what happened, Hugh had presence of mind to call Doctor McCreery from Whittemore. When the doctor reached the farm, he called Dr. R. A. Evans, Kossuth's coroner. Also called was an aunt, who found the parents and told them of the accident. No inquest was held for the child's death. Dr. Evans said it was purely accidental. Both doctors stayed with Hugh and his sister's body, until the parents reached home. The funeral was held Sunday at 2:00 p.m., at the Methodist Church in Fenton. The Rev. Fred C. Preul was officiating minister and he was assisted by the Rev. R. D. Kitterman of Good Hope. Burial was in Fenton Methodist Cemetery, rural Fenton, Iowa. Patricia Ann Carney was born August 21, 1941, on a farm southwest of Whittemore in Palo Alto County, the daughter of Hugo and Caroline (Schneider) Carney. Her entire life was spent there, except less than a month on the farm where she died. Surviving are her parents; one sister, Catherine Carney; two brothers, Richard and Hugh Carney Jr., all at home; one half sister, Marie Alvina Carney, a nurse at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs; and her maternal grandmother, Anastasia Carney of Algona. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Robert Carney and her paternal grandparents, Henry and Anna Schneider. The Algona Upper Des Moines, March 1947
