It was accompanied by a picture of Henry's old marble tombstone: Henry Tawes Boy of Four At Front For War of 1812 Henry Tawes was without doubt the youngest person to be on the front lines of the War of 1812. He was born in 1808 and was four years old at the outbreak of the war. Many battles of the War of 1812 were fought in the Chesapeake Bay area, and Somerset County did not escape a skirmish. During the period when the British were encamped on Tangier Island, they often made raids on the shoreline to get provisions for their troops. A young Tangier man heard the troops talking about a planned night raid on Jenkin's Creek. At dusk the lad set out in his boat and sailed to Jenkins Creek to warn villagers. In the darkness, word passed from house to house and from farm to farm that the British were coming. The men got their wagons and their hunting guns. They made a barricade of wagons, and took their horses for safety to a wooded area about a mile away. The British came by ship to the mouth of the Annemessex, then they lowered their landing boats to go ashore. Lying flat on the ground beneath their wagons, the Somerset men soon heard the swish of the oars of the British longboats. They waited until the boats were at close range and opened fire. Surprised, the British returned fire weakly, and within half an hour they were driven off. When the battle was over and the men were hitching up their horses, someone heard a child sobbing.
