Description	:	A native of County Mayo, Ireland, Patrick Reagan was the son of Patrick Reagan and Ellen Callaghan and the brother of Michael Reagan. A family tradition indicates Patrick and Michael were two of six children who lived with their parents and four siblings in a one-room house on a big estate where their father Pat was a horse trainer. The senior Pat traveled with the owner around Ireland to horse shows. Read More	A native of County Mayo, Ireland, Patrick Reagan was the son of Patrick Reagan and Ellen Callaghan and the brother of Michael Reagan. A family tradition indicates Patrick and Michael were two of six children who lived with their parents and four siblings in a one-room house on a big estate where their father Pat was a horse trainer. The senior Pat traveled with the owner around Ireland to horse shows. One advantage the Reagan boys had after they came to America was their ability to train horses, an important skill on the frontier in America. Kilcolman, County Mayo parish records suggest that Honor Fitzpatrick and Pat Regan married there on March 19, 1862; Michael Regan and Margaret Markin were the witnesses. ("Regan" was an alternative spelling of Reagan in the nineteenth century, and Honor like Nora is a variation of Honora.) The Reagan, Fitzpatrick, and Hughes families of County Mayo were closely intermarried. The Reagan, Fitzpatrick, and Hughes siblings and cousins assisted one another in their emigrations from Ireland to the New World. The exact date of Patrick Reagan's arrival in America is not certain. In 1910, the U.S. Census inquired of respondents the year of their immigration to the U.S. Patrick Reagan's census record says he arrived in America in 1866; Michael Reagan's record also identified 1866 as the date for his immigration. Tradition in the Fitzpatrick family suggests Tom, John, Katherine Fitzpatrick, and their mother, Mary Hughes Fitzpatrick, along with Patrick Reagan and some other Hughes relatives, came over probably in 1863 or 1864; another account, however, has them landing in New York in 1862. By one account, the ship was called the Carpathia; elsewhere somebody heard it as Circaspian. The trip reportedly took five weeks, but according to another account, the trip in steerage took eight weeks. Patrick Reagan's wife Honora Fitzpatrick Reagan, family stories indicate, had to wait a year or two before leaving Ireland to join her husband, because two children came down with scarlet fever. Patrick may have lived in Brooklyn, New York while he waited for Honora and the children to arrive. When Honora and the children arrived, they moved to Illinois. Patrick was a witness at his brother Michael's wedding at St. Rose of Lima Church, Kankakee, Kankakee County, Illinois on May 30, 1868. Patrick is said to have been very religious. Moving in 1874 to Greene County, Iowa, the 1900 Farmers Directory says he settled in section 30, Highland township, where he bought 40 acres of land, mostly on time, to which he added until he owned 160 acres of good land. Honora died at age 43 on Feb 10, 1883, leaving him, with his oldest daughter Mary and his mother-in-law Mary Hughes Fitzpatrick, to care for his seven children. When Patrick Reagan's mother-in-law died in 1895, Pat Reagan along with his brothers-in-law Edmund Fitzpatrick and Thomas Fitzpatrick were appointed appraisers of Mary's property. Pat Reagan never married again, remaining a widower for the last 28 years of his life. *Obituary of Patrick Reagan, Jefferson Bee, August 9, 1911* Death of Patrick Reagan Mr. Patrick Reagan, a respected resident of Greene County since 1874, died at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. James Minnihan, about four miles northwest of Jefferson, last Friday, after an illness of ten day with pneumonia. Mr. Reagan was 78 years old and was a native of Ireland, and prior to taking up his residence in this state thirty-seven years ago resided in Illinois. He leaves seven children, all of whom were notified of his illness in time to be at his bedside before the final summons came. They are as follows: Mrs. Mary Akolt, of Denver, Colorado; Mrs. William Fitzpatrick, of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada; Mrs. Nora Ferrell, of Farlin; Miss Bina Reagan, of near Jefferson; Mr. Patrick Reagan, of Moose Jaw, Canada, and Mr. John Reagan, of Emmetsburg, Iowa. The funeral was held at Churdan Catholic church Sunday morning, and the remains were interred in Cedar cemetery. The respect in which the deceased was held was shown by the large attendance of sympathizing friends at the obsequity. THE BEE joins these many friends in sympathy and condolence.
