Ballytaffy in County Mayo is a small community associated with Patrick Reagan's family prior to their immigration to America. Sabina, Honora, and Patrick, along with Reagan and Fitzpatrick, are all family names. Regan was a common spelling for Reagan before the spelling subsequently became standardized, and Honor is a familiar form of Honora just as Nora is. Based on the birth record from the database and the baptismal record, it seems probable that Patrick Reagan was actually born in July 1864 and not August 1865. A family tradition says Patrick's father came to America with other relatives in the 1860s while mother Honora and Aunt Cecelia stayed behind to care for Patrick and his sister, who were sick with scarlet fever. Patrick's father apparently waited on the East Coast, perhaps in Brooklyn, for a year or two for his wife and children to arrive. The family then moved west to Kankakee County, Illinois and subsequently in 1874 to Greene County, Iowa, where they ultimately settled. Patrick's mother died in 1883 when he was nearing his 19th birthday. The Iowa State Censuses of 1885 and 1895 show Patrick Reagan in residence at Churdan, Greene County, Iowa. The 1900 census shows Patrick Reagan living with his sister Mary Reagan Akolt and her husband John Conrad Akolt in Denver, Colorado. The obituary for Patrick Reagan's father says Patrick Reagan was living in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1911. His sister Ella and her family resided in Moose Jaw at that time. The following is his obituary from the March 17, 1953 edition of The Jefferson Bee. At the time of his death, according to his obituary, Patrick lived in Superior, Wisconsin. Though the obituary mentions a wife Mary, there is no reference in the obituary to any children, living or dead. SERVICES FOR PATRICK REAGAN AT CHURDAN Burial services for Patrick Reagan, former resident of Churdan were held at St. Patrick's cemetery in Cedar twp at 10 a.m., Thursday March 12. Rosary was recited at the Sallinger chapel on Wednesday evening March 11. Pallbearers were Michael Feeney, Gene Fitzpatrick, Gus Reagan, Walter Finnegan, Art Minnihan, and Donald Farrell. Patrick Reagan, son of Patrick and Nora Reagan, was born County Mayo, Ireland on Aug. 1, 1865 and passed away on March in Superior, Wis., at the age of 84 years, seven months and six days. Services were held for Mr. Reagan at St. Patrick's church, Superior, on March 10, with Mass celebrated by Father Quigley, OSM The remains were returned Greene county and were interred in St, Patrick's cemetery, where his parents were also burled. Rev. James Shannahan, pastor of St. Columbkllle's church Churdan, officiated. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Mary, and four sisters, Mrs. Nora Farrell of Jefferson; Mrs. Annie Minnihan of Perry; Mrs. Ella Fitzpatrick of Marcus, Canada and Miss Bina Reagan of Des Moines.
