She spent 83 years here with us, 65 of those with her husband Dick, who preceded her in death in 2013. Pat leaves behind a close family who will all miss her so very much. Pat and Dick’s marriage produced three children: Richard, Michael, and Lisa, who consider themselves fortunate to have been blessed with wonderful parents. Richard’s wife Val and Pat were also quite close. In addition, there are two granddaughters, Michelle and Jennifer, Jennifer’s husband Mike; and five great-grandchildren – Michelle’s daughters Dakota, McKenzie, and Rhianna, and Jennifer and Mike’s sons Skylar and Anthony, who will miss their grandma and great-grandma. Pat was born in 1932, to Noble and Grace Skeels, who lived in Republican City, Nebraska. When Pat was a little girl, her cousin Chairy came to live with the Skeels after losing her own mother. Pat and Chairy were raised like sisters, and being just 5 months apart in age, became inseparable and acted as though they were twins. At the age of 12, they were introduced to their new little sister, Peggy. A couple of years later, the US Army Corp of Engineers began a flood mitigation project to build the Harlan County Dam on the Republican River, just a short distance from the Skeels home. It was 1945-1946 and many young men returning from war found work on these kinds of projects. Dick Mittan and his best friend Dale Melander were two of these young men, looking for work. Pat saw Dick in the town café, and knew he was the one for her. It took some time, but not much trouble. Dick and Dale met Pat and Chairy, and the rest, as they say, is history. Two years later, on June 19, 1948, Dick and Pat were married. A few years later, Pat and Dick moved their family to Hastings, Nebraska. Pat made life-long friends there while doing accounting work for the J.M. McDonald company. Pat and Dick both got involved with scouting, Pat as a den mother and Dick as a scout master. Both of their boys, and later their daughter, would go on to Eagle Scout (boys) and all the way through Senior Girl Scouts. Pat joined Lisa’s troop leaders many times to help the girls learn a variety of things, from good posture and self-presentation to preparation of a healthy family meal. In 1960, the family again moved – this time to the area around Denver, Colorado – and picked out a neighborhood in which to have their house built. January 1, 1961, the family moved into their new home. The couple would raise their sons there, and their daughter Lisa, who came along in May of 1962. All of the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids celebrated many years of holidays there – Michael was married there – and it was still Pat’s home when she left to rejoin Dick after missing him so terribly since his passing.
