He was 81. The cause of Dr. Kerr's death was not immediately known to his family, his wife, Gloria, said. He was a patient in the hospital for about 10 days, and had been in failing health for several months. Dr. Kerr began practicing medicine in Hicksville July 1, 1955, his wife said. “His profession was the most important thing in his life,” Mrs. Kerr said. “He enjoyed caring for his patients. He knew them because he grew up here. They were old friends, and he did everything he could to keep them healthy.” Dr. Kerr retired from his Hicksville medical practice Nov. 30, having delivered 1,706 babies during his medical career. “I think the thing he enjoyed the most was delivering babies,” his son said. “He found great satisfaction in helping them at the start of their lives and seeing them as patients into adulthood.” Born in Hicksville, Dr. Kerr was an Eagle Scout and graduated as valedictorian of his class at Hicksville High School in 1936. He received a bachelor's degree in law and commerce from Ohio University, Athens, in 1940, where he was president of his social fraternity, Beta Theta Pi. He worked briefly at Armco Steel Corp., Butler, Pa., and was drafted into the Army in 1942. Dr. Kerr became a procurement officer and was on the staff of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, and part of the Allied occupation force that took control of Japan after World War II, his son, Paul Kerr III, said. After discharge from the Army in 1946, Dr. Kerr enrolled again at Ohio University, studied pre-med, and graduated in 1948. He was admitted to Ohio State University's medical school, and received his medical degree in 1954. Dr. Kerr completed his residency in family medicine at St. Rita's Medical Center, Lima, Dr. Kerr's son said his father was widely admired in Hicksville for returning home “at a time when the community needed physicians. He could have gone somewhere else for more money.” Dr. Kerr was an active Mason, was a member seven years and chairman three years of the Hicksville village school board, and served many years on the board of governors of Hicksville Community Memorial Hospital. He was a former member of the board of directors at the Hicksville Bank, and was a longtime member of the Hicksville Rotary. He was a member of Hicksville Grace United Methodist Church, the Hicksville VFW, the Hicksville American Legion, and the Ohio and American medical associations. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Gloria; son, Paul III; daughter, Debbie Doeden, and five grandchildren. Memorial services have not yet been scheduled.
