Paul was born Dec. 13, 1915, to Mattias and Marguerite (Wirz) Zurbriggen, formerly of Switzerland. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Helen (Muehlethaler) and his sister, Eda Weibel. Paul was born Dec. 13, 1915, to Mattias and Marguerite (Wirz) Zurbriggen, formerly of Switzerland. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Helen (Muehlethaler) and his sister, Eda Weibel. Paul is fondly remembered by his three sons, Bob (Joyce) of Elgin, Jim (Becky) of Portage La Prairie, Canada, and Tom (Sue) of West Salem, Wis.; his grandchildren, Ryan (Renessa), Elissa (Andrew Lehman), Matthew, Luke, Heidi (Brian Neufeld) and Timothy; his great-grandsons, Caleb, Micah and Ethan; his sister, Elaine Kenney of Elgin; and brother, Gordon (Lue) of Waverly; and his extended family, both in the United States and Switzerland. Paul was very proud of his family and his Swiss heritage. Paul lived in Elgin for most of his life, where he was an active member of the First Baptist Church, the Elgin Lions Club and the American Legion, having served in several capacities throughout his lifetime. He was proud of his years spent serving his country during World War II with the Timberwolves in Europe. He was honored for his service with The Purple Heart and The Soldier's Medal. Returning from the Army, he began teaching at Elgin Community School District where he became well known as a coach of baseball, basketball and football. Paul was in strumental in providing vision and leadership, which resulted in the consolidation of the Valley Community School District. He served as principal at both Elgin and Valley High School for many years and is affectionately remembered by numerous students and teachers. Paul was an avid vegetable, fruit and rose gardener. His most enjoyable pastime, however, was making memories with his family, especially going fishing and sharing special times at a lake resort. His church family and community were very important to him as well. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at West Union Good Samaritan Center and to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church of Elgin or the Gundersen Lutheran Hospice Program. Funeral services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Elgin, with Pastor Lee Boleyn officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Leonard Funeral Home in Elgin, and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Inurnment: 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Elgin Cemetery with military rites.
