He was an avid genealogist, who did the "heavy lifting" required to reveal the many branches of his family tree in the days before the internet made such research easier. He interviewed elderly relatives, plodded through countless cemeteries and burial grounds, and combed the archives of town offices and public libraries in an indefatigable effort to trace his ancestors. He collected bibles, journals, ledgers, scrapbooks and photographs from earlier generations, creating an impressive archive; and he typed the family lore and his own detailed findings into an equally impressive volume that he distributed to his children and eight siblings. His legacy will certainly survive him. . OBITUARY Schenectady, N.Y.- Paul B. Boyce died July 11, 2012, after a long battle with cancer. . He was born in Poultney, Vt., in 1927, the son of the late George P. and Emma (Bree) Boyce. . Educated in Poultney, he served in the U. S. Army from 1845-1947. He was a graduate of the University of Vermont and the State University of New York at Albany. From 1955 until his retirement in 1988, he was employed by the South Colonie School System first as a teacher, then as a guidance counselor. For several years he served as curator of the Poultney Historical Society Museum. . His hobbies included gardening, cooking, reading, listening to music, and traveling. . Mr. Boyce is survived by his wife of 58 years, Harriet (Parker), two children, and one grandchild. Daughter Janet L., and her husband, James Hacknauer, and their daughter, Melissa, live in Niskayuna; son Paul G. lives in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Other survivors include two sisters, Mary Kelly of Schenectady and Anne Ashley of Williston, Vt.; four brothers, George (Myrna) of Bristol, R.I., Charles (Shirley) of Spring Hill, Fla., Stephen (Wendy) of San Francisco, Calif., and James (Janet) of South Pasadena, Calif.; also several nieces and nephews. Sister Sylvia of Wells, Vt., wife of Dr. Nicholas Murphy, died in 2006, and brother John of Bridgeport, Conn., died in 2011. Note: By rights Paul's memorial here at Find-a-grave should have been created only after his ashes had been committed to the Poultney Cemetery, where four generations of his family have been laid to rest. But having been "beaten to the punch" by a zealous obituary hunter prior to the funeral of another brother-in-law, I was determined not to let such a thing happen again! It is a sorry state of affairs when a family must mount a preemptive strike like this in order to create their own memorial for a loved one. .
