Paul Sevcik, 42, had been a patient there since June 16, 1952 and never regained consciousness. He had been caught in the drive belt of the machine. Sevcik leaves his widow, a son, Craig, 17, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe Sevcik, Clutier, three brothers and three sisters Waterloo Courier May 27, 1963 Paul Sevcik, son of Joseph and Frances Zmolek Seveik, was born on a farm near Clutier on January 11, 1919. He received his education in the rural schools in that area and graduated from the Clutier High School in 1938. As a young man he was employed by various farmers until his induction in the Army on May 7, 1942 at Ft. Des Moines. He served in the office of Strategic Service at Quantico, Virginia most of the time he was in the service. He was discharged as a corporal on January 7, 1946 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. On January 3, 1945, he was united in marriage to Marie Frances Polka, youngest daughter of Joseph P. and Mayme Stadler Polka of Toledo. Their wedding took place at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Tama. Marie was born on January 9, 1926 and graduated from Toledo High School in 1943. Following his discharge, the couple made their home on a farm in Carroll Township. They had a son, Craig, born July 29, 1946. After only seven years of marriage, tragedy struck. On June 16, 1952 Paul was using his own hammer mill to grind feed. In some manner he became entangled in the drive belt and was thrown into the mill. He suffered a badly mangled right forearm, which had to be amputated; a dislocated left knee, an eye lens injury, and a depressed compound skull fracture on the right side of his head and general brain injury. For eleven years he lay unconscious, a patient at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. Marie was at her husband's bedside almost constantly for the first few months, caring for him. After the first two or three months, she went home for a weekend to visit her son, Craig, who was staying with her parents at Toledo. Later, Marie bought a home in Iowa City and worked at the hospital so she could be with him. Their son lived with her. Paul died on May 27, 1963. Marie later married Wm. (Bill) Gale and they have one son, Joey. They live in Iowa City.
