Read More	Salina Journal - May 1, 2000 CONCORDIA — Paul Cote, 85, Concordia, died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at his home. Mr. Cote was born April 5, 1915, at Concordia, and lived in Concordia since last year, moving from the Aurora community. He was a World War II Army veteran, a farmer and had worked in construction. He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church, Aurora, and later became a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia. He was a member of the National Farmers Organization and was a past board member of the Aurora Telephone Company and School District 104. He was preceded in death by three grandchildren and a great-grandson. Survivors include his wife, Eva of Concordia; 10 daughters, Pauline Cassel of Topeka, Regina Nelson, Mary Newton, Joan McNeil, Janet Nease and Martha Tatum, all of Concordia, Dorothy Chaput of Manhattan, Edna Schmitt of Beatrice, Neb., Loretta Detrixhe of Ames and Lois Schletzbaum of Overland Park; two sons, Raymond of Miltonvale and Mark of Concordia; four sisters, Irene Saint and Bernadine Kindel, both of Concordia, Teresa Begnoche of Aurora and Mary Breen of Wichita; a brother, Wilfred of Denver; 32 grandchildren;- and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Concordia, the Rev. Steven Heina officiating. Burial will be in St. Concordia Cemetery with military rites. A vigil will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Chapel, 325 West Sixth, Concordia 66901. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or American Heart Association. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Paul Cote was attached to the 3rd Armored Division as a private first class. The 3rd trained in the Mojave Desert, at the Desert Training Center, commanded by General Patton at this time. Further training occurred at Camp Pickett, Virginia. The 3rd was shipped to England from New York in September of 1943 and trained on the Salisbury Plain until 1944. The units of the 3rd went ashore on June 25th to take the lead in the attack on the Germans in Normandy. Mr. Cote was assigned to the 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, Reconnaissance Platoon. The 36th was attached to the 3rd Armored Division, which was the spearhead of the Army’s First Army’s VII Corps. The 3rd was called the Spearhead Division, as this unit placed at the front of the drive across France, always engaging first. The reconnaissance platoon was equipped with half-tracks and was at the lead of the Division, contacting and engaging the enemy before the main force of the allied armies. Action was heavy, frequent and casualties were high. The 3rd Division drove out of Normandy, through hedgerow country, into and past St. Lo, then occupied Coutances. The 3rd closed the Falaise Gap on August 21, 1944 at Putanges. On about December 19th, 1944 the 3rd had broken through the Siegfried Line and was closing on Stolberg. In August 1944, Mr. Cote received wounds which caused him to receive the Purple Heart. During action in France, he was recommended for the Silver Star, and was subsequently awarded the Bronze Star for bravery under fire. When the 3rd was fifty miles from Cologne, Mr. Cote was diagnosed with pneumonia and sent to England, then to the U.S., to recover.
