Paul was born near Riverdale, Nebraska, in a sod house on his parent's homestead, Mr. Franke was proud of his immigrant parents. His father, John Franke, escaped from his native Austria to avoid mandatory military conscription in the Yugoslavian army. Paul's mother, Mary Kregish, later made the difficult journey to America by ship with his older brother, Rudolph in 1889. Also born in this country was Paul's brother, John Franke, and sister, Anna Franke Glatter. Paul spoke only German until he entered the Peake rural school which he attended for eight years. Paul's favorite pastime was baseball, a sport he enjoyed with his brother John. He maintained his interest in baseball to the final weeks of his life, having followed the Dodgers through the 1988 World Series. In 1933, Paul was united in marriage to Leona Zimmer in Columbus, Nebraska. To this union were born three daughters; Shirley, Margot, and Paula. Paul's first employment was as a tank wagon driver for the Standard Oil Company. In 1934, he built and operated a Texaco station, later selling it to become an employee of the Farmer's Union Oil Company. Paul worked for this company as a faithful employee--both as a tank wagon driver and a service station manager--until his retirement in 1965. Paul also liked to buy, sell, and feed livestock on his acreage in northwest Pleasanton. Paul enjoyed playing cards, telling jokes, music, and singing. Occasionally, the family could encourage him to play his father's accordion. He was also an avid reader of political and economic material. Baptized in the Roman Catholic faith, Paul became an active member of the St. Mary's parish in Pleasanton later in his life. Paul's memory will be cherished by a host of friends and family from several generations, his widow, Leona, of Pleasanton, his children, Shirley L'Heureux of Upland, Margot Clark of Davis, California, Paula Rauert of Grand Island, 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. A memorial to the Cancer Society has been established in his memory.
