He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Hilda Glasspool and Esther Mitchel, brothers Arthur Hoefel and Harold Hoefel, and his beloved childhood sweetheart and wife of 65 years, Dora Marie. He is survived by his Children Gary Hoefel (Darlene), Beth Johnson (Marc) and Julie Hoefel, all of Spokane. Grandchildren Eric Johnson, Lance Johnson, Andrea (Hoefel) Smith, Brenda (Hoefel) Garberg and Great Grandson Cayden Garberg. Paul attended a country grade school, graduated fromOdessa High in 1939 as an accomplished trumpet player and attended WSU. He returned home to farmand enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942. Stationed at Douglas Air Force Base, he graduated fromthe Air Force Photographic Course at Lowry Field, CO, performing aerial photography for the Air Force, and was sent to the Army Engineer Drafting School, Fort Belvoir, VA, and was an X-Ray Tech at Kelly Field, San Antonio, TX. On his first furlough he returned home and married Dora in 1943, returning with her to Douglas AFB. He was Honorably Discharged in 1945. Paul and Dora returned to Odessa to farmwhere he had three children, Gary, Beth and Julie. Paul farmed for 45 years; he loved the outdoors and farming... it was his life and he was an exceptional and admired farmer. He enjoyed water skiing, scuba diving, gem, rock and arrowhead hunting, snowmobiling, singing and photography. He was a member of the Spokane Camera Club, receiving Best Print Award in 1950 and exhibited photos at the Seattle Museum. He served 25 yrs as Odessa Fire Commissioner, was Director of the Odessa Union, and served for seven years with the Adams County ASCS. As a Hanford Downwinder, he became an advocate for the cause and was appointed Historian, creating an extraordinary collection of articles and documents. In 1992 he was invited to travel to Chelyabinsk, Russia with the Spokane Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility to be a speaker at the World's Radiation Ecco Conference. Paul was actively involved in the Ritzville Mennonite Church as Secretary, Deacon, and Vocalist. Paul and Dora enjoyed travels to South America with a People-to-People Agricultural group, to numerous countries in Europe, Baja CA, and most meaningful, to the Middle East and a tour of the Holy Land. Paul sold his 4-generation Hoefel homestead farmin 1990, retiring in Spokane to be close to family. He continued ''farming'' a beautiful yard and garden, growing the best tomatoes and cucumbers. After 10 years in their own home, they moved to Harbor Crest Retirement Community. After his Sweetheart Dora passed away in April, 2008, Pauls health failed and he moved to Waterford Skilled Nursing where he quietly passed away with family by his side. Paul was a dedicated hard worker and perfectionist, had an extraordinary sense of humor and could joke with the best. He had creative talent and was always involved in some kind of project or activity. His Lord and beliefs were a ''quiet and special'' part of his life and he was looking so forward to ''going home'' to meet his Lord and be reunited with Mom. Dad was dearly loved and will be missed with fond memories. It was truly a blessing and an honor to care for and love Mom and Dad the last years of their lives. We loved them and cherished them. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you and appreciation to the Harbor Glen Caregivers, the Waterford Caregivers and Nurses, and to Hospice for their care, compassion and love. Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane. A Memorial Celebration will be held at the Mennonite Church, Ritzville, WA on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 1:30pm. Published on 11/23/2008
