He passed away after a short bout with cancer on July 19, 1991, at the age of 77 years, nine months and 26 days. He was the third of four children in the family. Shortly after his birth, the family returned to Exeter, where Paul’s grandfather had homesteaded and where his father became active in the funeral business. Paul soon took on the nickname of Babe, as he was the youngest of the boys. He attended and graduated from the eighth grade from St. Stephen’s Parochial School. As a young child he often served mass each morning before attending school. He always said he had little choice in the matter, in that his mother was a good Irish Catholic and had those plans made for him. He then attended Exeter High School graduating with the Class of 193. In his school years, he was most active in all high school athletic activities and this love for sports remained a large part of his life throughout his years. Following high school, he attended the University of Nebraska and Denver University where he participated in track. The community and people of Exeter always were a very special part of Paul’s life. Following college, he enrolled in the Kansas City College of Mortuary Science from which he graduated. He then entered the funeral profession, first at Exeter with his brother, Burton, and his mother. Later, he moved to Central City for a time where he assisted Les Solt, Sr. in operating the Solt Funeral Home. He later returned to Exeter where he operated the family business for his mother. It was at this time that he was called to active duty during World War II. He served his country overseas in the European Theater of Action for slightly more than four years, returning to the U.S. in December of 1945. Shortly before Pearl Harbor on December 1, 1941, he was married to Mildred A. Miller of Geneva at Kansas City, Ks. Following his return from the service a son, Paul R. was born. While Paul was in the service Mildred continued to operate her dress store, the Miller Style Shoppe, until he returned. At that time she sold her store to Pat Cumberland and she and Paul purchased the Geneva Hardware Store. In 1948, Frank Hrubesky retired from the funeral business and sold to Paul. He continued to operate both businesses for several years. He greatly enjoyed his days in the hardware store located where the Fran’s Café now stands. Afternoons were often a special time, when old timers such as Guy Case, Charley Pangle, Cash Bumgarner and Ed McCluskey would stop in and tell fishing and hunting stories and talk about the early days of Geneva. Being with people was what made Paul most happy and the hardware store provided ample contact. Soon the funeral business began to take more of his time, and he devoted his entire time to serving the public. The funeral profession, the people he served and the building at 242 North 10th were his life, and he continued to be most interested in their wellbeing long after his retirement. He was a people person, one who needed to be around others. He found it easy and natural to meet and know new people. His easy going, humorous personality made it possible for him to make many friends wherever he went. Mildred was never sure when they went out to eat whether he would ever sit down for dinner or would spend the entire evening visiting with other people in the restaurant. His genuine concern for others was aptly applied in his chosen profession. He was active in all community activities being a member and serving as President of Rotary, Lions and both the old and new golf clubs. He was a member of the Geneva Chapter of Commerce and lifelong member of the VFW and American Legion and participated in many of the activities which made small town life challenging and small town living rewarding. For many years he served on the Geneva Cemetery Association and was in charge of the care of the cemetery. As a funeral director, all other activities took a back seat to that of his chosen profession and the families he served. He was most honored in 1987, when he was awarded for fifty years of service by the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association for his many years of service to the association and the public. The respect and admiration of his peers made this a most memorable event in his life. His primary love and enjoyment throughout his life was the game of golf. He began at the age of 11 at a course long since gone which was located north of Exeter in the Underwood pasture. While in England, he played the old courses and when he returned from the Army, it wasn’t long before he and several others, including a longtime friend and fellow golf addict, George Cruse, actually built a golf course around the County Fairgrounds. The golf club was to take care of the fairgrounds in exchange for the use of the outside part of the fairground for golf. August and the county fair were never joyous occasions in the Farmer family, as Paul knew that it would soon rain and ruin the fairways. The fairgrounds never really existed in his eyes, it was the golf course and no place to be parking cars and having a midway. It was on the old course that he played his best golf and for many years held the men’s course record, shooting a 31 with one ball out of bounds. The old course of sand greens gave way to a new grass green layout called Hidden Hills Country Club, which began to take shape in 1965. Paul was one of the original board of directors and he, along with many other promoters, fought a long battle to see the new course to fruition. The club is now the center of the community and county recreational activity. This past football season was a high and a low for Paul, in that his Cornhuskers didn’t win them all, which they should, and his favorite high school team did. Geneva’s high school team went undefeated and won the state playoff. Although no grandchildren or family were on the team, they provided Mildred and him with much enjoyment and in spite of his health, he managed to attend all the games and looked forward to each coming Friday with almost boyish eagerness. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Pauley in 1935 and Nellie in 1946, and by his brothers, Burton W. in 1978 and Glen T. in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Mildred; son, P. R. and his wife, Betty; and by grandchildren who he dearly loved, Nate, Shawn, and Paige Farmer. Also surviving is his sister, Dorothy Nernberger and her husband Howard and sister-in-law, Loy Farmer, nephews and nieces and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Geneva at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 23, 1991, with Father Walter Banach officiating. Judy Ackland accompanied Curt Prater who sang “When the River Meets the Sea,” “Amazing Grace” and “Ave Maria” Pallbearers were Tom Biegert, Ray J. Cronk, Ron Nannen, Richard Nelson, Dan Petersen and Roger Trumper. Honorary bearers were John Brooke, Chester Dudley, George Cruse and Larry Doud. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery with the Farmer & Son Funeral in charge of arrangements, assisted by Charles W. Harris and Brian Bellows of Metz Mortuary in York, Kent J.
