Paul spent his childhood on the family farm, 5 miles north of Elwood, along wit his brothers, Ralph, Oral and Lloyd, and one sister Ethel [Pettijohn]. Read More	"The Elwood Bulletin" [Elwood, Gosper Co., NE], Wednesday, 26 Aug 1992: Paul Jay Tilson was born February 24, 1910 in the sod house of his parents, John O. and Stella A [Vinzant] Tilson. Paul spent his childhood on the family farm, 5 miles north of Elwood, along wit his brothers, Ralph, Oral and Lloyd, and one sister Ethel [Pettijohn]. Paul attended the Lone Star School through the eighth grade, and thereafter assisted his father and brother, Lloyd, is maintaining the family farm. The operation included crop farming as well as raising purebred Duroc hogs and Charloais cattle. The championship hogs earned Paul many ribbons and awards. On May 18, 1933, in Kearney, Nebraska, Paul and Ruby M. Rhinehart were married and took up housekeeping in the sod house, along with Paul's parents. Twin daughters, Marilyn [Jorges] and Marlyne were born in 1936. In 1947 Paul and Ruby built their home adjacent to the sod house in time to welcome another daughter, Kathy [Weismann] in 1949. Paul continued farming wit his father until Mr. Tilson died in 1958 at which time Paul took over the entire operation. In 1954 Marilyn married David [Ike] Jorges, Marlyne and Ed Bannister were married in 1957 and Kathy married Bill Weismann in 1982. Six grandchildren were born of these unions, all of whom hold found and happy memories of of the many weekend, summer and Christmas visits to the farm. Paul was very active in the Elwood Centennial committee and was a member of the Christian Men's Fellowship. Paul had a great love and appreciation of music and so began his second vocation, repairing and restoring player pianos, organs and antique furniture. Kathy was a vital part of this hobby and continues to enjoy the skills that she acquired through this endeavor. Paul was happiest when entertaining family and friends in the sod house and playing his Clod Hopper Band or one of this many other player pianos. He was especially pleased to welcome all the many school children who came out to view the historic sod house filled with family antiques. In September of 1991 Paul and Ruby and Tuffy, the family cat, moved from the farm to a home in Elwood. Paul continued his interest in farming and music by frequent trips to the homeplace. In August of 1992 Paul and Ruby were recognized by Ak-Sar-Ben for 100 years of continuous ownership of the John O. Tilson homestead. On August 8, 1992, Paul passed away in Elwood, Nebraska. Paul is survived by his wife, Ruby; his daughters, Marilyn Jorges of Lincoln, Marlyne Bannister and her husband Ed of Holdrege, Kathy Weismann and her husband Bill of Elwood. Grandchildren include Edward Bannister, Jr. of Lincoln, Kathryn Bannister of San Diego, CA, Cindy McCormick and her husband Craig of Holdrege, Marcy Overcash and her husband James of Lincoln, David Jorges and his wife Teri of Holdrege and Jennifer Jorges of Lincoln; Great grandchildren include Faith and Olivia McInturf of Holdrege, and Hudson and Cooper Overcash of Lincoln; sister-in-laws, Doris Wareham and her husband, Clyde of Gothenburg, Bernice Rhinehart of Elwood and Eva Rhinehart; a brother-in-law, Fritz Rhinehart of Elwood; niece Pauline DeWater of Mesa, AZ; nephews Deleard Pettijohn and wife Elaine of Denver, CO, Don Ballheim and wife Essie of Lexington, Elmer Ballheim and wife Irene of Eustis, Jimmy Dean Rhinehart and wife Laura and their 4 children of Arapahoe and Al Chambers and family. Funeral services were held Friday, August 21, at the First Christian Church in Elwood with Reverand John Hammons. Maxine Leggott and Ruth Tilden provided the organ and piano accompaniment with Pam Brand the soloist. Honorary pall bearers were Don Ballheim, Elmer Ballheim, Owen Brainard, Orin Dreher, Vaugn Leggott and Keith Willets. Casketbearers were Carlton Clark, Gary Essman, Terry Evans, Ike Jorges, Brand McInturf, Maynard Stoll. Internment was in the Elwood Cemetery with Berryman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. __________
