Visitation will be from 10 am to 7 pm Thursday, Jan. 23 at Tennant Funeral Home with Vigil and Rosary to follow at 7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12 pm noon, Friday, Jan. 24 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Rev. Wojciech Gierasimczyk celebrating. One misstep and the boy of Russian-German descent would be "thumped" by German Lutherans who lived north of Main Street. Artzer says after nearly 60 years he still remembers the hatred of the ethnic Germans in Sterling for the Russian-Germans who lived on the south side of Main Street. Life was not easy for the Artzer family in Sterling in the 1940s. He grew up in a small farmhouse off Sixth Avenue, served in the Korean War and when he returned home started his own plumbing business. Visitation will be held Thurs., Jan. 23, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Tennant Funeral Home. Vigil service and recitation of the rosary will follow at 7 p.m. on Thurs., Jan. 23, 2014. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Fri., Jan. 24, 2014 at 12 p.m. at the St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Rev. Wojciech Gierasimczyk celebrating. Paul was born north of Sterling to Jacob and Mary Eva (Appelhans) Artzer. He graduated from St. Anthony's High School, Northeastern Junior College and Western State College in Gunnison. He was in the USAF from 1952-1955 serving in the Korean conflict. He worked most of his life for Sterling Sheet Metal until he started Artzer Plumbing and Heating in 1974. Mr. Artzer married Margie Jean Slizewski on Oct. 12, 1957 in Sterling. They were married for 56 years. He was a member of the Elks Club. Mr. Artzer loved to go fishing and hunting with his boys and loved to watch all of his grandchildren in their musical, artistic and athletic pursuits. He was preceded in death by his parents Jacob and Eva Artzer; brothers Jacob, John and Andrew; sisters Mary, Molly, Suzie, Julie, Dorothy, and Baby Eva. Mr. Artzer is survived by his wife, sons, sisters, brothers, sister-in-law, and 11 grandchildren. The Tennant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
