Burial will be at Wilcox Cemetery with military honors by the veterans organizations of Wilcox and Hildreth. He was born April 1, 1930, in Wilcox to Willie and Clara Jane (Walters) Wendell. On Aug. 23, 1956, he married Ruth Mary Lawrence in Kearney. She preceded him in death on May 11, 2010. Survivors include his sister, Ruby Jean Hammett of Olympia, Wash.; sister-in-law, Margaret Wendell of Holdrege; brother-in-law, Walter Bauer of Culbertson; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many friends. He was the fifth of five children. Paul attended grade school and high school in Wilcox where he graduated with the class of 1948. Paul entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 11, 1951, and served in Korea with the 4th Platoon, Battery C, 231st AFA Battalion, 6th Armored Division. He was released from active duty on Sept. 11, 1953. He and Ruth were married at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. They lived on the Wendell family farm 1½ miles north of Wilcox on the county line in Phelps County. Paul farmed and raised cattle most of his life. Paul and Ruth moved to the Northridge Retirement Community on 17th Avenue in Kearney on Nov. 20, 2009. Ruth entered Mount Carmel Home Keens Memorial at Kearney on April 2, 2010. Paul became a resident of the Mother Hull Home on East 23rd Street in Kearney on Jan. 4, 2011. Paul was affiliated with the Wilcox United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Wilcox American Legion Post 377 and the Wilcox Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. He served in the Wilcox Volunteer Fire Department for several years. One of Paul's goals was to become a recipient of the Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation and the Nebraska Farm Bureau Nebraska Pioneer Farm Family Award for 100 years of continuous family ownership, which he received in July 2011. Paul, in later years, made a memorable trip to Alaska. He enjoyed farming and raising cattle. He also loved his dogs, especially his Chinese pugs. He enjoyed spoiling several of his nieces and nephews and loved playing with them. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his father on May 17, 1953; his mother on Jan. 13, 1966; brothers, Verle Wendell in 1979 and his wife Elvera in 2004, Lester Wendell in 1988 and Loren Wendell in 1991 and his wife Mildred in 2011; brother-in-law, Rollin Hammett in 2004; and sisters-in-law Joan (Lawrence) Luth in 1992 and her husband Ronald and Ruth's twin sister, Rita (Lawrence) Bauer.
