Description	:	Ruth Marie (Lawrence) Wendell, 80, of Kearney died Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Mount Carmel Home Keens Memorial. Ruth was born Oct. 15, 1929, in Kearney to Russell and Agnes (Litjen) Lawrence. On Aug. 23, 1956, she married Paul Wendell in Kearney. Survivors are: her husband Paul Wendell of Northridge Retirement Community in Kearney; brother-in-law, Fritz Bauer of Culbertson; 13 nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends and former students that she taught over 40 years. Ruth was born Oct. 15, 1929, in Kearney to Russell and Agnes (Litjen) Lawrence. On Aug. 23, 1956, she married Paul Wendell in Kearney. Survivors are: her husband Paul Wendell of Northridge Retirement Community in Kearney; brother-in-law, Fritz Bauer of Culbertson; 13 nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends and former students that she taught over 40 years. She was the older twin and second child of three children. She was baptized in infancy and later confirmed at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. She attended grade school through the eighth grade at St. James Catholic Grade School and high school at Kearney High School where she graduated with the class of 1948. Following high school, Ruth attended the Kearney State Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate in 1950. Following college, she taught elementary grades at Arapahoe for five years. Ruth and Paul were married at St. James Catholic Church in Kearney. They resided on the Wendell family farm, which was on the county line 1½ miles north of Wilcox in Phelps County. After her marriage, she taught 35 years at Wilcox Public Schools before retiring in 1990 after teaching for a total of 40 years. On Nov. 20, 2009, Ruth and Paul moved to Northridge Retirement Community northwest of Kearney. Ruth had resided at Mount Carmel Home in Kearney since April 2, 2010. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, was a member of a Wilcox Extension Club, the Nebraska State Education Association and the Wilcox Education Association. She was preceded in death by her father on July 5, 1943; her mother on Oct. 27, 1986; her older sister, Joan Luth and her husband, Ronald; and her younger twin sister, Rita Bauer.
