She died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Good Samaritan Home in Scribner. Paula Marx was born March 14, 1906, on the family farm between Scribner and Hooper to Fred and Louise (Wessel) Marx. She was baptized and confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran Church of rural Scribner. She attended a rural grade school near Hooper until moving to a farm west of Scribner, where she graduated from the eighth grade in rural School District No. 24. She attended Scribner High School, graduating in 1924. She attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont for two years. She taught in School District No. 60 for two years, from 1946 to 1948. On Nov. 29, 1928, she married Martin John Hilbers. In 1955, she started teaching again, working at District No. 35 east of Scribner. She worked there until the school closed in 1965. She then taught at District No. 90 south of Scribner until retiring in 1973. The following years were spent pursuing her many interests, including crocheting, reading, church work, attending and volunteering at the Over 60 Center and spending time with her children and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. On Nov. 18, 1999, she moved to Good Samaritan Center in Scribner. She was a charter member of United Lutheran Church in Scribner, where she taught Sunday School and was active in the ULC Ladies Aid and the Altar Society. She was preceded in death by her husband in June 1966, and her parents, and a sister, Irma. Survivors include: three sons, Virgil (and wife, Darlene) Hilbers of Lincoln, Dean Hilbers of Elkhorn and Eugene (and wife, Virginia) Hilbers of Scottsbluff; two daughters, Lois Hilbers of Omaha and Janet Killingsworth of Scribner; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Low of Burlington, Colo., and Evelyn Capps of Canon City, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews. The Rev. Susan Butler will officiate Monday's service. Burial will follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Scribner/Hooper. Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont, with family receiving friends 2-4 p.m., and one hour before services Monday at the church."
