Read More	Pauline Eva Burckhard Dacar, 87, of Belle Fourche passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at the Belle Fourche Health Care Center. On May 6, 1926 the world's best cook and lover of baby animals was born at the family farm in Emmons County, North Dakota to Anton and Rose Mary (Scherr) Burckhard. As the second oldest child among twelve brothers and sisters, she was needed to help work the farm, learning to harness and plow with a team of horses at the age of six. As part of the large immigrant community of Germans from Russia, the Burckhard family spoke German at home, but when Pauline went to school she was sent home by the teachers and told not to come back until she learned to speak English, which she did. Unfortunately her formal schooling ended midway through the sixth grade because she was needed to work on the farm. She often said she deeply regretted not being able to continue in school. In 1942, John Dacar was hired by the sugar beet factory in Belle to move a family from North Dakota who had been hired to work the beet fields. Little did he know that the dark haired 17-year-old beauty who sat in the front seat would steal his heart. On July 10, 1944 John and Pauline were married at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche. Until then, she had done outside farm work, but once married she had to cook for her husband, his brother Andy and the numerous relatives who might show up at the family homestead. The union of John and Pauline produced four children, Wayne, Frances, Dorothy and Jim. Besides the two boys and two girls, Pauline made the Dacar farm a welcome place for young cousins, nephews and nieces. Her brother "Bes" Sebastion lived with them for six years after returning from the service. Pauline taught herself to crochet in the evenings and got so good at it that she won several local and national contests. A true artist, she designed a table cloth of The Last Supper, sewed the girls dresses and evolved into a first rate cook where her children and grandchildren couldn't wait to eat "mom's strudels and dumplings." When John and Pauline moved in 1959 from the Townsend place east of town to their farm just off 13th St. in Belle, the Dacar place became where each incoming kindergarten class got to go to see and pet the baby animals. Especially remembered even today is Pauline's pet pig "Susie." John and Pauline loved to dance. She once said she would teach men to dance by telling them: "Don't look at your feet! Just listen to the music." One of her favorite tunes was the Blue Skirt Waltz. On July 2, this year the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band came to play at the nursing home and she could still tap her feet and remember the words to old German waltzes and polkas that they played. Her Catholic Faith gave her strength and comfort her entire life, and she said she appreciated the hospice volunteer who came to say the rosary with her each week. She gave back to the community through her involvement in the Catholic Altar Society and with the Women of the Moose Lodge. Kindness was Pauline. She always had a sweet smile for everyone, her family, friends and the wonderful caregivers at the nursing home. A hardworking life well lived; we will miss her dearly. She is survived by her daughters, Frances Cleveland of Belle Fourche and Dorothy (Jerry) Dacar-Calvert of Bozeman, MT; sons, Wayne (Martha) Dacar of Junction City, OR and James (Roxie) Dacar of Colony, WY; brothers, Victor (Dorothy) Burckhard of Rapid City and Sebastian (Darlene) Burckhard of Belle Fourche; sisters, Rose (Jim) Green of Belle Fourche, Victoria Baer of Redbluff, CA, Jeanette Smith of Redding, CA, Jean (Rob) Thompson of Willows, CA and Antonia (Rick) Carpenter of Oroville, CA; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Phyllis Burckhard of Sturgis and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Rose Mary Burckhard; husband, John F. Dacar; sisters, Frances Miller, Irene Popke and Eva Lynch; brother, Frank Burckhard. Visitation will be from Noon to 4 PM, Sunday, July 21 at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche. A Vigil/Rosary service will be held 6 PM, Sunday, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche with Deacon Ray Klein officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 AM, Monday, July 22 at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Monsignor Michael Woster officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche. The family suggests memorials to St. Paul's Catholic Church or to the charity of your choice. An online guest book is available at www.klinefuneralchapel.com.
