Description	:	Pearl Lillian Harmes was born on August 24, 1899 to Wesley Eugene Mitchell and Nantke Trauernicht on a farm seven miles north of Bryon, NE. She was the second of eleven children. She passed away August 19, 1993 at the Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler, NE, at the age of 93 years, 11 months and 25 days. She was baptized October 28, 1899 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hardy, by Pastor C. L. Ringer. She was confirmed on May 23, 1915 at St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, by Pastor F. W. Schulze. She attended Prairie School where she completed the 8th grade. She worked for other families until she was united in marriage on February 22, 1922 to George Albert Harmes at Chester, NE. After one year of marriage they moved to Sidney NE., where their three children were born, Marvin, Opal and Lorna. Their farm, which was owned by George's father, was taken over by the government in 1939 to build ammunition storage. They moved back to Thayer County and farmed in the Chester area until they retired, except for three years spent in McKinleyville, CA, from 1948 to 1951. After their retirement they continued to live in the Chester area. Pearl was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, NE, and also was a member of the Ladies Aid. Pearl's hobbies were crocheting, reading and working crossword puzzles. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Nantke Mitchell; husband, George A. Harmes on February 17, 1992; three brothers and five sisters. She is survived by one son, Marvin; two daughters, Opal Childers, and Lorna Garrett; two sisters, Mildred Kerr, and Grace Rieke; 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. Services were held Monday, August 23, 1993, 2 o'clock p.m. at the St. John Lutheran Church, Chester, conducted by Pastor William Larsen. Organist was Mrs. Alvin Poppe. Casket bearers were Russell Heidbrink, Charles Heidbrink, Alvin Poppe, Dennis Heidbrink, Lloyd Derowitsch and Can Poppe. Interment was made in the Chester Cemetery, Chester, NE.
