PEGGY WILLIS DIED LAST SATURDAY Young Matron Passed Away After Short Illness FUNERAL SERVICES HELD WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON Mrs. Peggy Jane Willis, the former Miss Peggy Jane Ward, died at the McCready Memorial Hospital in Crisfield Saturday evening of last week, after an illness of about a week, at the age of 21 years. Mrs. Willis had been on a visit with her husband, Alonzo Willis, Jr., of the U.S. Coast Guard, in Pittsburg, and became ill on her return home. She was taken to the hospital for treatment, and everything possible that medical skill and nursing could do was done to save her life, but without result. The young couple had been married but about three months, and it is understood that he was about to sail overseas, when through the efforts of the Red Cross, he was located, and given permission to return home for the funeral of his wife. He left one of the southern ports by airplane, landing in Louisville, Ky., and from Louisville came to Washington, D.C., by plane, thence by bus to Sandy Point Ferry, and was fortunate enough to find transportation to Princess Anne from the ferry, and then down home, arriving here Tuesday afternoon. Mrs. Willis was one of the community's finest young ladies. She was well known to most of the people here, and had endeared herself to them by her sweet disposition, unfailing good humor, and innate courtesy. News of her death was received with deep sorrow by relatives, friends and acquaintances alike. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer E. Ward, of the Asbury section, and was born and reared there, the oldest child of the family. Before the funeral there was sent to her probably the most numerous and beautiful floral pieces ever seen in the community, showing the love and esteem in which she was held by so many people. Funeral services were held at Asbury Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with the pastor, Rev. J. T. Rowlenson, officiating. She was laid to rest in Asbury cemetery. The pallbearers all were members of the United States Coast Guard, stationed at this port. Mrs. Willis is survived by her husband, her parents, a sister and two brothers.
