H. and Penelope Baker, born May 21st, 1854, near Drakesville, Iowa (Davis Co.), with her parents came when a few months old to the vicinity of Pleasant township, Appanoose County, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood, receiving her education at the school, where she also taught, at an academy at Chillicothe, Mo. She taught schools in Missouri and Iowa. At early womanhood she confessed her faith in Christ, at a service conducted by Elder S. H. Hedrix at Numa, Iowa, and was batized [baptized] in Cooper creek near there. At the age of 24 years she was married February 15th, 1879 to Parmer S. Davis of Franklin Twp., Appanoose County, Iowa. Having no children of her own, she mothered a baby boy of ten weeks to manhood, also a girl aged 3 years to womanhood. Interested as much as able in others she contributed to her church and its interests, being a life member of the Christian Women's Board of Missions. She believed the gospel, the power of God and earnestly tried to live and teach it to the best of her ability. Card of Thanks. We take this means of expressing our thanks, to all who contributed work, flowers, singing, cars, and especially Bro. Amos Carr, who conducted the funeral rites of our dear mother. Centerville Daily Iowegian and Citizen, Centerville, Iowa, Saturday, July 5, 1941, page 4 Funeral Services Held At Cincinnati Cincinnati - Funeral services for Penelope Jane Davis were held Monday afternoon at Franklin Township with Amos Carr in charge. Mr. Carr took his text from the 14th Chapter of John and delivered a very comforting message to the bereaved relatives and friends. Music was furnished by a mixed choir who sang "Shall We Gather at the River" and "Going Down the Valley." Many friends and neighbors were present to pay their last respects to a dear departed sister. Display of beautiful flowers showed the high esteem in which she was held. Burial was made in Livingston cemetery. Out of town relatives Mrs. James Hickie and daughter of Godfrey, Ill., Byrd Bennett of Unionville, Mo., Jimmy Davis of Knoxville.
