DeWitt Lewis b. 1892 d. 1958 Oliver Perry Lewis b. 1897 FUNERAL SERVICES HELD TUESDAY FOR PERRY LEWIS Perry Lewis, a former Urbana community resident passed away Sunday at Eustis, at the age of 89 years. Funeral services were held at one o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Eustis, where he had for the past years made his home. Burial was in the Urbana cemetery southeast of Bertrand. Those of the Urbana community who knew Mr. Lewis especially felt a distinct loss in his passing. He was always on the spot when help was needed. Perhaps this short tribute, written by John A. Pierce of Urbana, better explains Mr. Lewis activities in the early days: "You have come to the end of the trail. You have laid your armor down. Yet your memory is still heard. It was to you the neighbors turned when a teacher was needed to teach the children. It was to you we turned when a day's help was so badly needed. When coal was needed at the church or school, we waited, yes, Perry never failed us. "To you for so many acts of help, we remember you. "When you said, "The air was full of music and singing as if only the other waves were controlled" - we remember your prediction of weather, crops, the birds and fields. "Yes, you rest on the plot of ground you gave your neighbors and your church. We carry on, but your memory still lives with us." PEERY LEWIS, 90, DEAD Perry Lewis, 90, passed away Sunday following a brief illness. Rites were held Tuesday at noon at the Evangelical church, the remains taken to Loomis for burial in the family lot. Crystal Lenz played the accompaniment for Mrs. Birch Lehman and Mrs. E. G. Keller who sang "Trust and Obey," "Some Day" and "The Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Rev. Walter Lenz, local pastor, officiated. Obituary Perry Dewitt Lewis was born on April 21, 1852 in Deleware County, Penn., and departed this life on Nov. 15, 1942 at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 24 days. He was united in marriage to Martha Almira Shaw on Jan. 14, 1877. To this union were born three sons and three daughters: James R. Lewis of Lewellen, Nebr.; George W. Lewis of Loomis, Nebr.; Oliver P. Lewis of North Platte, Nebr., Mrs. F. E. Steinbrink of Elwood, Nebr.; Mrs. B. J. Carlile of North Platte, Nebr.; Mrs. Frank Travis, deceased. His wife preceeded him in death in Nov. of 1911, and his only sister, Mrs. Anna Lewis, also proceeded him in death just one week. His childhood and early manhood was spent in Pennsylvania and Illinois. In the year of 1874, he came to Nebraska making the trip by covered wagon. This was a very eventful trip as they were attacked by Indians and saw large heards of buffalo. After traveling over several western states he returned to Nebraska and settled on a homestead in Phelps county seven miles southwest of Loomis. He taught school and worked as a veterinarian. Those pioneer days were difficult days which demanded strength of character to face the hardships and discomforts which those early Pioneers had to endure. After his wife's death he spent much time in the homes of his children and grandchildren. He was a great Bible student and a firm believer in God and in Jesus Christ, and was faithful to the church of his adoption. He spent the last eight months in the home of Robert Stevens where his cheerful and patient disposition has endeared him to all. He leaves to mourn his passing his five living children, 40 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends. P. D. Lewis Funeral Services in Eustis Tuesday Afternoon. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Eustis for P. D. Lewis, 90, who died Sunday at the home of Mrs. Della Stevens, near Eustis. Services were conducted from the Evangelical church by Re. Lenz, pastor of the church, and interment was in the Urband cemetery south of Bertrand, beside the grave of his wife. Born in Pennnsylvania, April 21, 1852, Mr. Lewis was married to Martha A. Shaw, in January 1877. To this union were born six children, James of Lewellen, George of Holdrege, Oliver of North Platte, Mrs. F. E. Steinbrink of Elwood, Mrs. B. J. Carlisle of North Platte, and Mrs. Mary Travis, deceased.
