Peterson established the firm of Hartman & Peterson, wagon manufacturers and blacksmiths. Perry William Hartman was born in Oneco Township, Stephenson County, Illinois. He is a son of Jacob Hartman and Elizabeth Mattern (likely pronounced Möttern, which some of the family branches have preserved which would likely sound Marden to the English ear). Perry William Hartman acquired his education in the schools of Oneco Township, Stephenson County, Illinois, and Boone, receiving his last lessons under Professor Wallace. He completed his education at the age of fifteen. He earned his first money by helping the sheep shearers employed by Thomas Bowen of Green county, Wisconsin. Hartman would catch and hold the sheep until the men would take them from him in order to wash them before shearing operations began. At the age of seventeen he took up the blacksmithing trade with James Douglas Kirkpatrick of Spencer, Iowa. His apprenticeship lasted three years, and he then worked as a journeyman for George Ward of Spencer, for one year. Returning to Boone, he entered the employ of Jack Nipps and subsequently the wagon shop of Hayes & Johnson, remaining with the latter firm for sixteen months. At the end of that time he removed to Alta, Iowa, where he remained for four years. During this period, 1879-1882, he and other members of the family made their living by harvesting swamp grass at Storm Lake. They shipped the dry swamp grass to Chicago for lining horse stalls. Perry William and Almira Hartman settled at Alta. Later, during pregnancy she became ill. On March 18, 1879, their son Perry Vernon Hartman was born. She and baby Perry returned to Boonsboro to live with her family (a fact attested to by the 1880 Census record). Perry William remained at Alta to pay off the debts they incurred there and then joined his wife and son in Boonsboro. In Carroll, Iowa, Perry William Hartman conducted a furniture business which he bought from his old teacher, Mr. Woodring, and whom he first met again upon this occasion. He then returned to Boone, where he engaged in business independently, establishing himself in the fifth ward, and there he has now been engaged in business for fifteen years. He built his present shop about 1910 and at that time took in as partner Frank G. Peterson. He headed a profitable and extensive business, and his reputation as a man of affairs was well established. Success attended the efforts of Mr. Hartman because he always acted with determination and never lagged in industry in pursuing his projects. Perry William Hartman was the owner of the land on which the grave of Milton Lott was situated at Pea’s Point. In November 1905, the Madrid Historical Society resolved to place a monument to commemorate the fact that Milton Lott was the first white person to die within the boundaries of Boone County, and to perpetuate the historic even which caused his death. Mr. Hartman was present for the dedication of the monument. Mr. Hartman was ever true to the faith of the German Reformed church, in which he was baptized. Politically he was a republican and thoroughly versant with the aims of his party, always ready to support its measures and candidates. He was particularly interested in local affairs and often gave his support to valuable measures, although he was not an active politician. Fraternally he was popular in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of Phythias. Editor's Note: The biography for Perry Hartman may be found in The History of Boone County Iowa (1914), Vol. 2, pp. 562-563. It reports his date of birth as January 20, 1856. The U.S. Census for 1910 reports his DOB about 1856 and the census for 1930 is about 1857. His gravestone records it as 1857. His death certificate reports his DOB as January 8, 1854 and his date of death as January 3, 1934.
