Granddaughter of John Mann and Pursia Stratton Mann. ____ The Kingman Journal Kingman, KS Friday, June 22, 1934 Mrs. Clinton Black Mrs. Persia Black, one of the pioneer mothers of the county for over fifty years, died at her home Saturday, June 16 at the age of 87 years, eight months and two days. She had been in failing health for several months, and became worse the past few weeks. She and her husband came to Kansas in 1879 and took a claim about two miles from the present site of Penalosa, but at that time the distance was measured from Hutchinson, which was then the trading post. Sod houses marked the dwellings of the settlers and the nearest neighbors lived ten miles away. Persia Siglove [sic] was born October 14, 1846 in Franklin county, Ind. She was united in marriage to Clinton Black on March 2, 1868. Mr. Black, who was a Civil War veteran, died on February 10 [sic], 1923. Eight children were born to this union, two of whom, Hattie Catherine, age 5, and K. Black, age 2, preceded them in death. The six children who survive are William Clinton Black of Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. Eva Spiker of Kingman, Mrs. Luda B. Love of Enid, Okla., Mrs. Mary Etta McOsker of Turon, Mrs. Della Sinnett and Mrs. Lelia Sinnett of Kingman, who were all at her bedside at the time of her death. Mrs. Black was baptized over forty years ago at Langdon and has been one of the upright Christian mothers of the county. She has lived in Kingman about twenty-five years. In addition to the six children, 82 grandchildren and 55 great-grandchildren survive her. Mrs. Black proved a neighbor and Christian throughout the years of long residence here. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Christian church in charge of Rev. A. C. Hornbaker. Interment was in Walnut Hill cemetery.
