Rudolph Buchli, Sr. and his wife [Nee Ursula Roffler] came to Chicago where he was a hat dyer. Peter Buchli was born in Chicago in 1885 and immigrated with his parents to Dakota Territory the same year. His parents homesteaded south of the then frontier town of Hebron, North Dakota. Peter Buchli grew into the ranching business at an early age when he went to work, as branch manager, for Ferdinand Leutz in 1903. He managed the ranches' extensive horse and cattle operation some 15 miles north of Hebron. An old ledger entry of the ranches' books showed that the ranch sold $7000 worth of horses to homesteaders in 1907. The Leutz ranch was also a famous overnight stopping place for farmers and ranchers who lived north of the Knife River before the railroad came from Mandan to Killdeer. Many interesting exploits of those stops took place at this ranch. In 1906 Peter Buchli was married to Margaret Hoerauf, daughter of another pioneer family, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hoerauf who also came to Hebron in the early 1880s, from near Frankfurt, Germany. To this union there were five children born: Hilda [Mrs. Sam Morris], Big Timber, Montana; Albert [rancher and horse trainer] at Three Rivers, Texas; Irma [Mrs. Thomas Gartley], Grants Pass, Oregon; Cora [Mrs. David Hill], Madison, Alabama; and Agnes [Mrs. Kenneth Bolke], Dickinson, North Dakota. Descendents as of this date are twelve grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. In 1908 Peter Buchli left the Leutz ranch and started his own ranch 20 miles north of Hebron on the Knife River. He purchased the original 40 acres from the government that maintained a post office known as "Broncho." This was later moved to the E. M. Walker place. The Walkers continued to operate the Broncho post office until 1912 just prior to coming of the North branch of the Northern Pacific Railroad. From this meager beginning of 40 acres and Mrs. Buchli's homestead, the Knife River Ranch started to grow in spite of many pioneer hardships such as: droughts, prairie fires, severe winters, and low livestock and grain prices. Through the forty years of operation, the ranch grew to 10,000 acres which included the purchase of some 8 to 10 homesteads. The ranch gained prominence for its outstanding feeder cattle and fine horses, both draft [and in the last twelve years of operation in partnership with his son, Albert] many fine quarter horses were produced and sold into many states. The ranch became a showplace. The swinging suspension bridge across the Night River designed and built by the Buchlis [150 feet long - 16 feet wide] was the first of its kind in the state to carry motor traffic across the river. Peter Buchli was president of the local school board for over twenty years. During his lifetime he was a lifetime member of the American Hereford Association, The American Aberdeen Angus Breeders Association, charter member of the North Dakota Stockmen's Association and member of the Montana Stock Growers Association and also a member of the North Dakota "fifty years in the Saddle" Club. Peter Buchli bred, raised and sold literally many hundreds of horses for the Homestead trade and often told many interesting incidents that took place in the handling and sale of these range horses. He also was for years a prominent livestock buyer in the state and acquired a ranch in Montana that Hilda and her husband purchased. Along with many interesting pioneer exploits he told about; he always chuckled when he told about the purchase of his first ["iron horse"] a Model T Ford about 1915. It was equipped with Presto lites [carbide energy]. It seemed on the families way back from Hebron one Sunday night, it got late and the lights had to be ignited. About 4 miles from the ranch the lights failed and in order to continue the journey, Mother [Mrs. Buchli] had to walk in front of the car, holding up her long dress so the white petticoat was visible to indicate where the wagon trail was for the car wheels to follow. Albert purchased a ranch in Montana in 1949 and because of Mr. Buchli's failing health, the famous Knife River Ranch was sold to J. L. Connelly who is still the present owner. Peter Buchli died August 23, 1953 and was laid to rest in Hebron, North Dakota. Mrs. Margaret Buchli continues to reside at Dickinson, North Dakota at the age of ninety-two as of this writing, March 28, 1975. Among her pioneer memories she recalls having picked buffalo bones in her youth on the Dakota prairies to supplement the family income and has vivid memories of having plowed with a team of oxen.
