Ansorge, pastor, conducting the final rites. Burial was in the Manning cemetery. Pall bearers were six grandsons, Lewis Schroeder, Merlin Schroeder, Gilmore Joens, Clifford Joens, Robert Joens, and Donald Rix. Mr. Schroeder passed away at his home Wednesday evening, June 27. The Saturday before he had fallen at his home and had been confined to his bed since that time. He had enjoyed excellent health for a man of his age and took interest in the affairs of the farm and liked to walk about the farm, even attempting to assist in the work. He was walking about his home place Saturday with the aid of a cane, his only concession to old age which helped him, since his sight had begun to fail, when he fell. Mr. Schroeder was born April 5, 1852, at Hohenfelde, Holstein, Germany. His birthplace was east of the Probstein on the east end of the main road to Kiel, parallel with the Baltic Sea coast. He spent his childhood days in his native land and helped support himself by working on a farm. When but a child he found a place in Stakendorf in the Probstein, where he worked during the summer and attended school during the winter. When he was 14 years old he came with his parents to America, landing in New York, July 4, 1866. Their destination was Clinton, where the parents settled on a farm. Mr. Schroeder found work for himself and came to Carroll county in 1877 and purchased 30 acres of land five miles north of Manning in section 20, Washington township, where he has made his home for the past 67 years. The first purchase was in the south side of the section and a few years later purchased the north half. When Mr. Schroeder came to Manning, his land was virgin prairie. In 1907, he purchased the 80 acres across the road from his property, and owned 240 acres of land with two complete sets of farm buildings. He built his own modern home on the north 80 acres. In 1878 on June 20, he was married to Miss Lena Ronnfeldt at Lyons, and immediately after their marriage they came to Carroll county to the bridegroom's farm. This marriage was blessed with one son, who passed away at the age of three years, and in 1883 the young husband lost his wife. In 1885, he married a sister of his first wife, Miss Bertha Ronnfeldt, at Carroll. Eight children were born to them: one son, Herman, passed away May 21, 1928. The remaining children are: Mrs. Albert Joens, Lillie; Mrs. John Frahm, Amanda; Mrs. Walter Joens, Laura; Mrs. John Joens, Lena; Elmer at home; Mrs. Alfred Rix, Elsie; and Edna at home. His wife also survives and he has 11 grandchildren. All live in or near Manning. Mr. Schroeder, the last member of his family, was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister. Relatives from out of town who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Louis Ronnfeldt and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ronnfeldt of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Schroeder and daughter and Fred Schroeder of Schleswig, Henry Lilienthal and daughter of Atlantic, Mrs. August Schroeder, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Petersen, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schroeder, Mr. and Mrs. George Schroeder and Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schroeder of Westside, and Mr. and Mrs. Louie Schroeder and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schroeder of Aspinwall.
