Peter is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Great Falls; a son, Pete McDermott, a daughter, Julie Mikkelsen, a grandson, Tom, and granddaughters Chrissy and Kayle, all of Great Falls; sisters Beverly Nash of Cut Bank, Helen Dolezal of Chinook and Dixie Swenson of Great Falls; brothers Rodney McDermott of Bellevue, Wash., Henry McDermott of Shelby and Kenneth McDermott of Fairfield, and numerous nieces and nephews. Peter was born Feb. 28, 1927, in Gold Butte, to Pete and Ruth (Barnes) McDermott. He was educated at the McDermott School at West Butte and attended Sunburst High School, receiving his GED later in life. He entered the Army on July 23, 1945, at Fort Douglas, Utah, serving as a truck driver and auto mechanic. He was discharged at Camp Gruber, Okla., on Feb. 9, 1947. He married Ruth Kruger in Havre in 1947. Peter worked the family coal mine, McDermott & Sons, at West Butte. He then bought the Smith Place near Kevin, where he farmed and operated a sheep ranch, and later moved to Shelby, where he worked for the city as a mechanic. Peter later moved to Great Falls and worked for the old Columbus Hospital. After retiring, he moved to the family ranch to help his mother, Ruth, and raise rabbits, turkeys, chickens and cattle. He stayed with his aging mother until her death in 1994, then lived in Shelby until his death. Peter was a member of the VFW and Eagles. He enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, listening and dancing to "the good ole" music. He also liked spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren. He always had stories and jokes to tell them. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Patrick and William; and sisters Rosemary McDermott, Elnora Lammerding and Betty Zell.
