He was born at Warrior, Alabama, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. McDermott. He was born at Warrior, Alabama, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter J. McDermott. His father was a coal miner, and before the turn of the century, the family moved to Canada, settling first at Nanaimo, B. C., and then at Lethbridge. About 1904 the family returned to the United States, and settled at Belt, Mont., where the son also learned the coal mining trade. In 1913, the McDermott family moved to West Butte, and bought a large tract of land which included a lignite coal mine and the son became associated with his father in the coal mining business. For many years the McDermotts supplied fuel to all this area, including Ferdig, Oilmont, Kevin, Sunburst, Sweet Grass, and even exported coal to Southern Alberta. When coal gave way to natural gas and mining became unprofitable, Mr. McDermott turned his interests to raising livestock and farming. About 1915, he married the former Ruth Barnes, who survives. He leaves five sons, Rodney, Seattle; Henry, Guy, Billy and Kenneth, all of West Butte; five daughters, Mrs. Art Lammerding and Mrs. Rowlin Zell, Shelby; Mrs. Eddy Nash, Cut Bank; Mrs. Robert Dolezal, Whitlash; and Dixie McDermott, West Butte; five brothers, Henry and Edward, Sunburst; James and Pat, Billings; and Phil, Butte; one sister, Mrs. Dougal Marks, Mecaha, Mont.; and several grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the St. Thomas-Aquinas church in Sunburst. Burial was in Gold Butte cemetery. --- Son of Peter Joseph McDermott and Elizabeth Nolan.
