Stiefer, a former Geneva businessman, passed away at the Geneva General hospital, Wednesday evening, November 19, 1952, aged 80 years, 2 months and 1 day. He had been in failing health two years. Mr. Stiefer was born September 18, 1872, at Pettin, Luxemburg, one of six children of Peter and Mary Stiefer. At the age of 21 he came to the United States and went to Steinauer, Neb., where he had relatives. Mr. Stiefer was married May 4, 1899 to Catherine Mary Fournell of Steinauer at Marysville, Kas. The bride was also a native of Luxenburg. To this union were born four children, Mrs. Irene Koser, Alvan and Leo, who now reside in Denver, and Lillian, Mrs. Porter Sloan, of Geneva. Mr. and Mrs. Stiefer and family came to Geneva in 1906 and Mr. Stiefer opened an ice cream parlor and café in the Geneva State Bank building. Mr. Stiefer operated this business until 1918, building a wide reputation as a maker of fine ice cream and homemade candy. After selling his business in Geneva, Mr. Stiefer went to Minden and engaged in the same work until 1931, when he sold out and retired. He spent the succeeding years with his children in Denver and Geneva, with several months each year in California. Mrs. Stiefer passed away while visiting in Geneva, February 19, 1929. Mr. Stiefer is survived by the four children, also five granchildren, Newton and Irene Koser, Blaine Sloan, Kathryn Sloan, ??? and Peter Stiefer, and five great-grandchildren, Jimmy, Barbara Ann and Karen Sue Koser of Col., and Michael and Deanne Sloan, at present residing in Jerusalem, and a brother, William in Luxenburg. Mr. Stiefer had a philosophical view of life and a happy disposition that made him many friends. He believed energy and hard work essential to success, but he always had time to encourage others. Sorrow did not embitter him. During his illness he never uttered a word of complaint, although he spent much of the past two years in hospitals. During the time he was in business in Geneva, he was always a booster for civic betterment. He was a member of the Catholic church. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic church at 10 a. m. Saturday, November 22. Rev. Paul Ulenberg officiated. Pallbearers were Roy Carson, Lawrence Doud, Harry Goold, John Koehler, Ed McCluskey and Earl Wilkins. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal 27 Nov. 1952 page 1.
