Read More	SLOAN, LILLIAN JOSEPHINE—Lillian Josephine Stiefer Sloan was born to Peter John Stiefer and Catherine Mary Fournell Stiefer on June 1, 1900, at Beattie, Kan. She passed away on June 21, 1996, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 96 years and 21 days. She was one of four children in the family. After living briefly in Dubois and Steinauer, Lillian and her family moved to Geneva on 1906, where her parents owned and operated a restaurant. Lillian remained a resident of this community for 90 years. She first attended Geneva Public Schools until St. Joseph’s Catholic School was built. She continued through the eighth grade at St. Joseph’s and then attended and graduated from Geneva Public High School in 1918. Lillian’s family had moved to Minden, but she remained in Geneva to finish high school. She excelled in drama and dramatic readings and at one point, was encouraged by her drama coach to consider a career in acting. Her enjoyment and zest for reading were a passion she continued throughout her life. After her graduation she went to Denver, Colo., where she lived with her sister and family while attending business school. Following his discharge from the Army after World War I, Charles Porter Sloan joined her in Denver, and he and Lillian were married there in the Catholic Cathedral on Feb. 13, 1919. Four children were born to this marriage. Lillian was a devout member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She was active in P.E.O., Madre Kensington, American Legion Auxiliary, Geneva Women’s Club and Book Review and the Fillmore County Hospital Auxiliary, having held offices in all of these organizations. In her leisure hours she enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, crocheting and needlework, playing bridge and traveling. She always enjoyed visiting with friends and relatives. She took great pleasure in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. While Port was living, they traveled extensively in the United States. Following his death, she and her sister-in-law, Esther Sloan, traveled through Europe and the South Pacific. She was a loving and patient person in her relationships to all she knew and her quick wit and sense of humor endeared her to all she met. During her later years she devoted much of her time to caring for her brother, Alvan P. Stiefer. Like so many others of her generation, she endured drought, depression and two World Wars. Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, Peter J. and Catherine Fournell Stiefer; husband, Charles Porter Sloan; children, Charles John and Lillian Marie; sister, Irene Koser; brothers, Alvan P. Stiefer and Leo H. Stiefer; and son-in-law, Sherman F. Ashby. She is survived by son, F. Blaine Sloan and his wife Patricia; daughter, Kathryn S. Ashby; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; a step great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 25 from the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Geneva with Msgr. Ivan Vap officiating. Music was provided by the St. Joseph’s Women’s Choir with Mary Ann Najmon playing the organ. Casket bearers were Charles P. Sloan II, Michael B. Sloan, Leland Rosenquist, Richard Hagge, James Ashby and Eric Bigglestone. Interment was in the Sloan family lot at the Geneva Public Cemetery beside her beloved husband.
