Peter John DeVries was born Sept. 6, 1896, to John and Mary (Stap) DeVries in OudeBildtzyl, Holland. He came to the United States when he was 12 years old. He settled with his family in the Turton and Ashton communities. He came to Aberdeen in the early 1920's, where he farmed at Sunnyside Farm. He married Lenora Rose on April 20, 1924, in Aberdeen. In 1925, he established DeVries Dairy in Aberdeen. In the mid-1950's, his son joined him in the business until it was sold in 1979. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Aberdeen, a life member of the Elks, Masonic Temple, Sunrise Lodge No. 211, A.F. & A.M. and Scottish Rite bodies. He was initiated in Sunrise Lodge No. 211, A.F. & A.M. and passed to the degree of fellow crafts and was raised to the degree of master Mason in 1941. He later became a member of the Yelduz Shrine in 1944. He received his 50-year pins in both the Scottish Rite and Sunrise Lodge No. 211 in 1991. He was a member of the Aberdeen Country Club, where he enjoyed golfing daily until age 97. Survivors include one son, Wayne DeVries of Iowa City, Iowa; two daughters, Yvonne "Bonnie" Bissell of Aberdeen and Mrs. Gerald (Joanne) Larson of Bloomington, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one sister. Casketbearers will be grandsons: Michael Bissell, Terry Bissell, Douglas DeVries, Craig Larson, Jay Larson, Mark Schulze, Andy Block and Grady Cooper. Organist will be Peggy Cruse, and soloist will be David Eckert. The family requests memorials to First Baptist Church, 1500 E.
