An obituary will be published next week. KENMARE NEWS, Kenmare, ND; Thursday, June 2, 1921 Peter Johnson Hjort Peter Johnson Hjort was born January 25, 1840, at Kristianstad, Sweden. At the age of 23 he was married to Maria Anderson, and three years later came to America, settling on a farm near Cokato, Minnesota, later moving to Lake Elizabeth, Minnesota until coming to Kenmare in 1901. Here Mr. & Mrs. Hjort lived on their homestead west of town until 8 years ago when Mrs. Hjort died after which Grandpa Hjort lived with his children, having stayed with his daughter Mrs. Swedlund at Powers Lake most of the time, at which place he was staying at the time of his death which occurred June 1st 1921, after an illness of about six months. The funeral took place from the Baptist Church at Powers Lake, Saturday, June 4th at 9:45 after which the remains were brought to the Kenmare Baptist church where services were held at 2:30 the same day. The services were in charge of Rev. W. A. Barclay, pastor of the local church and Rev. Erling Monnes of Powers Lake. The music was in charge of the church choir. Solos were sung by Mrs. Shigley and L. Bergstien. A profusion of flowers showed the high esteem in which the deceased was held. Burial took place in Lakeview Cemetery beside those of his wife. P. J. Hjort was one of the pioneers of Kenmare. He leaves to mourn his death three sons and two daughters – Nels, Henry and Mrs. Ostrand of Kenmare; Mrs Gust Swedlund of Powers Lake and Ed Hjort of Medicine Lake, Montana; also 29 grandchildren of which 21 are living and four great-grandchildren.
