Description	:	Peter Lucas, one of Alton's pioneer merchants, passed away quite suddenly Thursday noon, May 5 at the Orange City Hospital. He was taken to the hospital the preceding Monday after breaking a hip at the Henry Schuller home, where he resided with his daughter and her husband. Mr. Lucas was born Jan. 27, 1881 at Pella, and came to Alton with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Lucas, when about three years old. He was engaged int he grocery business here for 57 years. He was taken to the hospital the preceding Monday after breaking a hip at the Henry Schuller home, where he resided with his daughter and her husband. Mr. Lucas was born Jan. 27, 1881 at Pella, and came to Alton with his parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Lucas, when about three years old. He was engaged int he grocery business here for 57 years. As a young man he was first employed in that business for Wm. Stronks and later bought a business for himself. He retired from business in 1955. He married Dena Bekman June 18, 1908 and she preceded him in death in March, 1944. Mr. Lucas was graduate of Alton High School, Class of 1898, one of the earliest classes to graduate from that school. After his retirement from business in January 1956, he went to live on the farm with Mr. & Mrs. Schuller. He was a faithful, almost lifelong member of the Alton Reformed Church, a charter member and active leader of its former Christian Endeavor Society, served for many years as secretary of the Sunday School and in other activities of the church. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Alton Reformed church, Rev. Clarence Greving officiating. Geraldine and Ray Schreur sang "Softly and Tenderly," "My Lord and I" accompanied by Mrs. Wm. Kroon, organist. Van Etten Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Emerson Lucas and Adrian Lucas, both of Primghar, Howard Lucas of Sheldon, Bob Lucas of Hospers, Gerald Den Herder of Hull, E.J. Aalbers of Alton. Interment was in the local Nassau Township Cemetery. Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Henry Schuller of Alton, one sister, Miss Nell Lucas of Sioux City, four brothers, Henry of Sioux City, Arie of Sheldon, Herbert of North Sacramento, Calif. and John of Milwaukee, Wis. Preceding him in death besides his wife, were his parents, four sisters, and one brother in infancy.
