Life: He was born in Marysville, CA on October 15, 1948, to Margaret and Iner Jacobsen. Both of his parents preceded him in death. Pete grew up in the Tudor area of Yuba City where he attended first through eighth grades at Central Gaither Elementary School. He graduated from Yuba City High School in 1967. After graduation he took a few classes at Yuba College and then moved to Sacramento with his sister and brother-in-law where he was hired by the State of California - EDD. He retired from EDD after thirty-five plus years of service. He enjoyed his fellow state workers and made many lifelong friends during his years there. Pete was a very kind and honest man who was hard working and extremely loyal to his family and friends. He never asked for anything but gave to everyone unconditionally. Even during the last month of his life he remained concerned about the welfare of his family as well as his neighbors and friends. Pete took great pleasure in cooking and trying new recipes. He generously shared his delicious food with everyone. For years he cooked spaghetti on Halloween at his sister's house. His brothers and their families would come and all the cousins would trick or treat together. Many friends would stop by during the evening to relax and have some of Pete's terrific spaghetti. It didn't matter how many people showed up, he never seemed to run out of food. The past few years that Halloween tradition has continued in the home of his nephew and family. Before his passing Pete gave his spaghetti recipe to his niece, Jordan. Uncle Pete, as he was known by almost everyone, had a very special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews and their friends. He enjoyed a Florida trip with them visiting both Disney World and Busch Gardens. On the car trip home he was able to see some of the places that he had read about. One of his longest trips both in miles and time spent was to the Philippine Islands. During that trip he was saddened by the number of children that were begging in the streets. He had one memorable trip with his nieces to the Shakespeare Theater in Ashland, Oregon where they experienced a downpour of rain during the performance. Their blankets and jackets were soaked and they were freezing cold but the show went on. Pete loved going to Las Vegas. He would get up early to walk the strip just to take in the shops and people. Then he would find a quiet spot to sit and read a book. He had an annual pass to Disneyland/ California Adventure for many years and made the most of every day he was there. At Disneyland, California Adventure, Six Flags and Knotts Berry Farm he enjoyed riding the roller coasters over and over with his nephews, nieces and friends. He was the ultimate Diana Ross fan. He attended at least fifty of her concerts through the years, starting with a concert of the original Supremes at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento. Earlier this year he waited several hours in line at Thunder Valley Casino to get front row tickets to her show in July. He had planned to take his great nieces to see her for the first time. They will honor his memory by attending the concert even though it will be difficult without Uncle Pete in the front row with them. He is already deeply missed by the four people he saw almost daily and who enjoyed face-timing and "bugging" their Uncle Pete: Josie and Jordan Tarrell and Matthew and Mary Daugherty. He listened to their many jokes, hemmed and repaired their clothes, mended their stuffed animals, taught them how to cook some of their favorite foods, drove them to school and picked them up when needed, held movie nights and sleepovers at his house, traveled to Disneyland with them, took them to McDonald's or anyplace else they wanted to go. He took great pride in their accomplishments. When everyone else was "too busy" for them their Uncle Pete never was. Family: Peter is survived by his three older siblings who he loved deeply and constantly worried about: Sister, Diana Gardenhire-Tarrell (Jim) of Sacramento, CA; Two brothers, Dudley Gardenhire (Veronica) of Olivehurst; and Donald Jacobsen of Live Oak; Nieces and nephews, Margie Tarrell-Daugherty (Michael); Doug Gardenhire; Donnie Jacobsen (Karisa); Sheri Gardenhire-Barnes (Greg); Jimmy Tarrell (Stephanie); Jason Jacobsen (Carrie); Sara Gardenhire-Prado (Leo); Seventeen great nieces and nephews and a great, great niece and nephew. He also leaves behind many dear cousins and one aunt, Mary Brown in Tennessee. At Peter's request there will be no services. Instead of flowers or memorials he asked that his time on earth be honored by doing something with your family or friends to show your love. Pete has been cremated and will be buried with his mother and father at Sutter Cemetery in Sutter, CA. Arrangements were made through Chapel of the Twin Cities in Yuba City.
