Read More	Source: Oskaloosa Herald, (Oskaloosa, Iowa) October 31, 1901 Peter Shoemake died of Bright's disease at Goldendale, Washington, Sunday, October 13, 1901, at 7:15 p.m. Mr. Shoemake was a brother of Isaac G. and Wesley Shoemake, of Madison, and Mrs. Sallie Barr, of Adams township. The early life of the deceased was spent in Mahaska county, Iowa. He was a son of Enoch and Deedie Shoemake, born September 10, 1843. The subject of this sketch was the first child born in what is now Madison church community. He was left a motherless babe at the age of five months. His mother's grave was the first one made in that neighborhood. Mr. Shoemake was of an exemplary character, and whenever we find this type of life we recognize it as worthy of praise. From his youth up Mr. S. Was an earnest student, a generous school-fellow, and the few classmates who are left behind will silently pause in the busy walks of life to drop the sympathetic tear for the bereaved family in their western home. The above named is the third of the log cabin school and the third one of the writer's old class who have closed their eyes since the May-time to open them in the beautiful beyond and behold the supremacy of God. Those of the class who preceded the deceased to the Paradise of God the present year were Suda Coffin Miller, Shelby, Iowa, and Martha Patrie Dowden, Prairie City, and all of whom died in the triumphs of a living faith in God. Mr. Shoemake united with the Baptist church in the spring of 1862 and was nearly forty years in the Master's service. He was married in February, 1870, to Miss Kate Ames, of New Jersey, and of this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters. At the time of the father's death two sons were in Alaska, a married daughter in Portland, Oregon, the younger children, Pearl and Raymond, at home with the mother. Peter Shoemake with his family left Iowa in 1882 and settled at Goldendale, Washington Territory. Later on he moved to University Park, Portland, Oregon, and there in order to educate his children builded a comfortable home. Extracts taken from the letters written by the stricken wife and daughter will explain matters more fully to Iowa friends in regard to the closing hours of a well spent life. Mrs. Shoemake writes: "Goldendale, Washington, Oct. 1 - Peter is fast nearing the end of his journey. We came over the range this summer hoping the change would do him good. He talked of Iowa friends but realized that his strength was not sufficient for a visit to the old home. Since we have been here he has failed rapidly. Oh what a patient life. He has such sweet communion with the Lord and is such an example to his children." October 10 she writes: "I am watching beside my dear one. Today he looked up in my face and smiled, although his suffering was very great. For three months he has desired my presence continually. I have tried to put death off, but I have to meet it. I know God has promised to be all to me and to strengthen and keep me in this hour." "Oct. 16, 1901 - Dear auntie and uncle Wesley - We have very sad news to tell you. Dear papa has left us for a much happier home. Oh! It is so lonesome without him. He died without even a struggle Sunday evening, and he looked like he had just dropped asleep.
