The following was provided by H.E Bailey Find A Grave member#47320890 Source: Oskaloosa Daily Herald, April 16, 1909 SHOEMAKE - As the sun sinks calmly to rest at the close of a tranquil summer day, so sank to his eternal rest, our old friend and schoolmate, Wesley Shoemake, March 30, 1909, at his home at University Park, aged 57 years, 9 months and 6 days. His life's span was oy a little more than two years the limit of that the Psalmist allotted to man, but his life leaves a record of obstacles overcome and things accomplished, that are in many ways worthy of emulation. Mr. Shoemake was undenominational in religious belief, but honest in his views and was the standard bearer of what he believed to be the way most acceptable to server the true and living God. That being filled with the spirit, we walk by the Spirit of righteousness and truth, free and untrammeled by the tenets of the established churches. He at one time affiliated himself with the Baptist church, but after a few years withdrew his membership to pledge allegiance to the newer faith - the faith in which he happily lived he remainder of his life. As a preacher of the Gospel he has for many years promulgated this faith and eternity alone can tell the great good that has resulted from these ministrations. Mr. Shoemake was the promoter and one of the foremost founders of the Madison Chapel of Madison township, and numerous the times has his voice been from the pulpit of that beloved edifice, and about it his affections fondly clung to the last days of his life. To Wesley Shoemake death had lost its sting, and through the two years of his decline the faith that sustained him in death sustained him in that cruel hour - the hour when the soul stands unclothed in the presence of the living God, and the oft repeated assurances were, "All is well." As a pioneer of 65 years ago, Mr. Shoemake was early made acquainted with the hardships and strenuous time of that early day and lived to see many changes, not the changes alone in the physical condition of the country, but changes of manners and customs of social life as well, and is an example of what a determined will can do in defeating the adverse conditions of early environment. Life others of his day, he was handicapped by the scant educational facilities of his time, but he was one to make the best possible use of the opportunities at hand, and being a person of sound judgment, his life in all ways was most singularly successful. Mr. Shoemake was born in Jefferson county, Iowa, and was the fourth child of Enoch and Desdemona Shoemake, and came with his parents when about three years of age to the farm in Madison township, a farm that is historical from the fact that at one and the same time there were 1000 Indians encamped on it not far from Skunk river. Enoch Shoemake later helped to transport them to the Tama reservation in Tama county. The old farm still bears the name of Shoemake on the county records. Wesley Shoemake has long borne the distinction of being the oldest native born Iowan in the township, and the honor was also his of being the only preacher of the Gospel that Madison township ever produced. He was early ensured to the buffets and hardships of pioneer life, but by his fine native ability and strong good sense he was enabled to lift himself up and out, and is one who can be truly termed self-made. Mr. Shoemake's domestic life was most congenial, and his widow, who was Miss Elizabeth Coffin, and to whom he was united in 1860, is left desolate after a happy companionship of 48 years. Besides his wife he is survived by a son, B.F. Shoemake, and three granddaughters and four brothers and three sisters, namely, I.G. Shoemake and Mrs. Mose Barr, of Madison township, John Shoemake, of Missouri, Mrs. Mary Curley and Mrs. Ella Carter, Enoch and Rob, of California, besides a host of friends there and here who are saddened by the dispensation. The funeral was from Madison Chapel at 2:30 April first and was conducted by Mrs. Gilmore, of Oskaloosa and Miss Laurana Terrell of Central Holiness University, and was an impressive and comforting service. Mrs. Gilmore taking her text from St. Matthew, 8th chapter and 11th verse. "And I say unto you, that many shall come from the east and from the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the Kingdom of Heaven." Despite the unfavorable weather, there was a large attendance of old neighbors and friends who gathered to pay respect to one so well known among us. Madison choir rendered some very excellent selections and the floral tributes were most lovely. Burial took place in Madison (or Shoemake) cemetery and there, surrounded on every side by kindred and by old time and intimate friends and associates from pioneer days to the present, his body lies in the tranquility of that last, long sleep which knows no waking. One by one the early pioneers are falling in eternal sleep and soon, very soon, the place that knows them now will know them no more, and their history will be as a "tale that is told." Their work is done, they're gone before, To join the ransomed throng; Beyond the tide, on the other shore, They sing redemption's song.
