Miss Kelly _______________ There follows an excerpt (with more detail) from ‘The Shriver History’ (privately published in 1933) written by Arthur Cecil Shriver III, of Charleston and Mattoon, Illinois, May 15, 1933 AD. ‘Andrew (Schreiber) Shriver [b.1709], who came to America in 1721 with his parents, was the first of the branch of the Shriver family who later came West and settled in Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois. We have mentioned earlier in this narrative that in 1752 Ludwig Schreiber (Shriver) and his family were living in York County, Pennsylvania, on lands purchased under Maryland grant, the land being situated so near the border line of Maryland-Pennsylvania that both claimed it, but survey later placed it in Pennsylvania. ‘Of Ludwig Shriver Sr.’s immediate family, very little can be found of record. It is known by family word of mouth that he continued to live on this land grant until his death, which occurred in 1805, when he was almost 100 years of age. ‘He prospered, as prosperity was measured in those days, and raised a fairly large family. It seems that his family all left home as soon as they were old enough, some going south and some west, seeking their fortunes as the newer sections of the country were opened up. ‘It is known that one son, evidently Ludwig Jr., married and went to Berkley County, Virginia, settling there upon a plantation near the Potomac River, where he became quite prosperous. To this union were born three children, one son Peter Shriver and two daughters. [Ed. Note: Though Ludwig’s wife’s name is not confirmed to our current knowledge, it is thought to be Mary [1755-1804]; the family also believes that Peter had two younger sisters named Elizabeth born about 1771 and Margaret born about 1773.] ‘Peter was born March 5th, 1766, and was married in 1792 to Rebecca Faris of Virginia [b. 12 Feb 1769]. To this union there were born nine children. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Flemingsburg, Kentucky, where they lived for 18 years, moving then to Adams County, Ohio. ‘Peter’s wife Rebecca died January 21, 1811. The nine children of Peter and Rebecca Shriver were the following: Elizabeth Shriver, born June 8, 1794; m. Wm Havens; d. 23 May 1869. Nancy Shriver, born Jan 1, 1795, m. George Higginbottom of Kentucky. John Faris Shriver, born March 1, 1799; d. 25 Oct 1870, Winchester, Ohio. Mahala Shriver, born Aug 18, 1801; m. Ezra Sparks of Winchester, Ohio. Elenor (sic) Shriver, born Aug 19, 1803; m. Joseph Bailey of Winchester, Ohio. Robert Shriver, born Oct 21, 1805; m. Sarah Bailey of Winchester, Ohio. Peter W. Shriver, born Mar 21, 1807; m. Hannah Reese of Aberdeen, Ohio. Rebecca Anne Shriver, born Dec 11, 1808; m. James Sparks who died. - Rebecca married again to Col. Wm. Robe; Mrs R A Robe living in Winchester, Ohio, in 1892. Eli Wilson Shriver, born Nov 15, 1810; m. Miss Kelly of Hillsboro, Ohio. ‘Peter (Sr.) was married again, his second wife being Martha Chenoweth, a daughter of Arthur Chenoweth, Esq., of Piketon, Ohio. [Ed. Note: The suffix ‘Esq.’ for Esquire, then normally denoted a legal professional.] They were married at Piketon, Ohio, on March 28, 1812, and as a result of this marriage, eight more children were added to the family. Soon after their marriage they moved to Fleming County, Kentucky, where they lived for 10 or 12 years, and where most of their children were born. ‘They then returned to Ohio in Adams County, near Winchester.
