He attended the schools and grew to young manhood in Troy Grove. He was married in that city to Miss Helen Neu in 1881. Shortly after their marriage, Mr and Mrs Sondgeroth left their native state and came to Iowa, settling on a farm in this county. At that time this county did not present the inducements it does now. He attended the schools and grew to young manhood in Troy Grove. He was married in that city to Miss Helen Neu in 1881. Shortly after their marriage, Mr and Mrs Sondgeroth left their native state and came to Iowa, settling on a farm in this county. At that time this county did not present the inducements it does now. They, like the other pioneer settlers, applied themsleves industriously to the task ahead of them and by hard work and careful planning made for themselves and their children a home and brought their farm up to a high state of cultivation. Mr Sondgeroth set a high standard by his mode of living. Honest, deeply religious, and conscientious, he was highly esteemed by those who came in contact with him. After remaining on the farm for a number of years, the Sondgeroth family moved to Halbur where Mr Sondgeroth assumed the managership of the local elevator. Fourteen children were born to this union: Theodore, William, Katherine (Mrs William Hausman), Anna (Mrs Joseph Hausman), Nicholas, John, Theresa (Mrs Henry Romey), Mary (Mrs Anton Riesberg), Josephine (Mrs Otto Greteman), and Elizabeth. The other four children died in infancy. Peters wife, Helen died on Dec 18, 1918 and Peter died June 17, 1928. After his wifes death, Peter retired from active business and in 1919 moved to Bonesteel, SD, where he lived until his death. Both Mr and Mrs Sondgeroth are buried in Halbur.
