Description	:	Mrs. Anna Westergard, a pioneer of this community, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dan Ronan about 10:30 Sunday morning, following a lingering illness. She was bedfast 16 months preceding her death. Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning at St. Mary's church with Rev. R. Graf in charge. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery. Anna Potthoff was born at Troy Grove, LaSalle County, Illinois, Oct. 20, 1866, and so had reached the advanced age of 76 years, 6 months and 17 days. In 1878, when but 12 years of age she came to Iowa, locating near Carroll. Later she came to Ireton where she was employed. She was united with Nick Westergard at Rock Valley, Nov. 23, 1886. The first 12 years of her married life she lived on a farm four miles southeast of Hawarden. They then moved onto their own farm six miles south of town. Ever since this was her home with the exception of two years when she lived in Hawarden. Her husband preceded her in death Nov. 19, 1930. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dan Ronan, Hawarden; Mrs. Mike J. Puhl, Arkon; Mrs. Nick Ruppert, Tracy, Minn., and one adopted son, William, LeMars. There are 25 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She also leaves four brothers and two sisters, Conrad Sondgroth, Carroll; Theodore Potthoff, Halbur, Iowa; Henry Potthoff, Gary, S.D.; Barney Potthoff, Rapid City, S.D.; Mrs. Mary Schumacher, Chatsworth; Mrs. George Meyer, Ray, N.D. One sister, Mrs. Joe Startlz, Emerson, Nebr., and one brother, Anthony Potthoff, Halbur, Iowa, preceded her in death. Mrs. Westergard was a woman who possessed a great deal of patience and she met the obstacles in life most courageously. It seemed as if she had more than her share of sickness in her life but she bore her burdens with great fortitude. Since the death of her husband, 12 years ago, Mrs. Westergard was practically an invalid, and during this period she was critically ill at various times. About eight years ago she submitted to a major operation but even in her frail heath she possessed a great deal of patience and she met the obstacles in life most courageously. About four years ago she was in the Hawarden hospital for about three months and breaking her hip in a fall and then a year ago last January she fractured her pelvis in a fall and was confined to the hospital several weeks. She was a true Christian woman and was a faithful attendant of St. Mary's church when her health permitted. Since the death of her husband she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Dan Ronan and family, and received tender care from them during her illness.
