Littleton has lost another of her good men and honored citizens in the death of Peter S. Whitcomb, who entered peacefully into the larger life at 11.30 a. m. Tuesday, January 14. Although he had not enjoyed his usual health for a week past, there seemed to be no cause for alarm. Suddenly but peacefully the end of his earthly career came as he sat in his easy chair. It had been his wish that he might live to see the town improvements - water and electric lights installed, when he would with perfect contentment join the larger company of friends who had passed on before him. This wish was gratified and he had remained long enough to enjoy these conveniences in his own home. Mr. Whitcomb, son of Andrew and Caroline (Hartwell) Whitcomb, was born in Littleton seventy-seven years ago and he made this town his home throughout his life. With one of his former townsmen, the late Andrew Robbins of Groton, he entered into partnership in the milk business in Boston. Later he was associated with Mark Burns in the same business and more recently he was connected with the Boston Dairy company. He represented the type of business man not often enough seen in present times - a man who was absolutely to be trusted because of his strict integrity, high sense of honor and loyalty to those principles that distinguish the real gentleman. Mr. Whitcomb was married to Miss Lucy M. Fletcher of Littleton Thanksgiving day, November 24, 1857. He is survived by her and their two daughter - Mrs. George M. Lovejoy of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. Henry A. Robbins of Newton. He leaves also six grandchildren and two brothers, J. Hartwell Whitcomb of Littleton and John Henry Whitcomb of Ayer. Mr. and Mrs. Whitcomb observed their golden wedding anniversary five years ago when they most hospitably entertained a large company of townspeople and friends from far and near at their pleasant home in the Center. In social and in business relations Mr.Whitcomb was always the same happy congenial and distinctly optimistic person. Whatever experience came into his life his courage and abundant good cheer were always in evidence and no one who associated with him even for a short time could help being impressed and helped by these marked traits. Mr. Whitcomb was a member of the Unitarian parish and attended church as often as his health permitted. He enjoyed a good sermon and a well prepared lecture. His periodicals and magazines were a source of great pleasure and mental stimulus and he read frequently from the substantial literature in the public library. There was no greater source of comfort and enjoyment, however, than that furnished by his devoted wife, children and grandchildren in whose company and interests his happiness was complete. Mr. Whitcomb will be missed and mourned by a large circle of friends in Littleton and other towns where he was well known and universally esteemed. Funeral services were held from his late home Friday afternoon, January 17, and were attended by numerous relatives, townspeople and business associates from Boston and vicinity, whose tribute to the memory of the deceased was further expressed in the wealth of choice flowers that surrounded the casket. Rev. Oliver J. Fairfield officiated and favorite hymns were sung with sympathic sweetness by select voices. The Interment was in the family lot in Westlawn. (Littleton Newspaper - Jan. 1913)
