Mell Dies After Illness Of Six Months P. T. Mell, first clerk of the Allen-co Board of Elections, pioneer district school teacher and widely known business man, died at 4 a.m. Thursday in his 125 S. Metcalf-st home. His wife was at the bedside when the end came after an illness of six months. Well known in Lima for his real estate operations for 25 years, Mell also had a wide acquaintanceship in Allen and surrounding counties. Born in Gomer, Mell, whose father, John, was a school teacher, received his primary education there. He completed his preliminary school work in Cairo, later studied law at Ohio Northern university. At the close of his schooling, Mell taught country school classes in Sugar Creek and Bath-tps for 10 years. Records show the Lima pedagogue instructed many district resident who were much older than he. Among his pupils who are well known in this state is Preston Thomas, former warden of the Ohio State penitentiary. Last year Mell was accorded combined "pupil and teacher" honors at a homecoming celebration held in Sugar Creek school. NAMED ELECTION BOARD SECRETARY Interested in matters politic and civic enterprises, Mell was appointed the first official secretary of the Board of Elections on July 4, 1891. Later this capacity was changed to that of clerk. He served for one year. For many years Mell had been precinct committeeman in Fourth Ward, Precinct E. Recently he officiating as presiding judge of the precinct now designated as "D." From 1900 to 1906 Mell held the position of county recorder, having been Allen-co deputy treasurer for four years previously. Prior to being a real estate agent for many residential properties, Mell was in the oil business. His well drilling and field operations extended thruout the Lima area as well as part of Indiana. He was one of the organizers of the Sherman Oil Co., one of the pioneer companies during the Lima oil boom era. Mell was a charter member of the Lima club. He also was a Mason. As a member of the Elks' lodge, he was the 54th man initiated into the local B.P.O.E. chapter. Mell was a member of the Congregational church. He likewise was instrumental in the erection of the old Christian church, located at Elm and West-sts. MARRIED HERE 30 YEARS AGO Mell was married 30 years ago in Lima. His wife formerly was Miss Louise Hoover, daughter of a prominent early family in this community. His widow and a daughter, Mrs. Julius J. (Mary Martha) Beddingfield, of Miami, Fla., are the only survivors. Mrs. Beddingfield, who is a public school teacher in Miami, represents the fourth generation of the family to follow the education profession. A sister and brother of Mell, who preceded him in death, also were school instructors. Funeral of Mell probably will be held Saturday afternoon at the Cantwell funeral home. Time of the rites is undetermined pending arrival of Mrs. Beddingfield. The body will remain at the mortuary until time of the service. Mell, first clerk of the Allen-co Board of Elections, who died in his residence, 125 S. Metcalf-st, at 4 a.m. Thursday, will be conducted by the Rev. Neal Dow Newlin at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Cantwell funeral home. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. His daughter, Mrs. Julius J. Beddingfield, of Miami, Fla., upon whose arrival in Lima the time of funeral arrangements had been pending, is expected to arrive Saturday afternoon. His only other survivor is his widow. The widely-known business man had many acquaintances in Allen and many surrounding counties. For the last 25 years he had been active in real estate operations. He was born in Gomer where he began his primary education. After completing his preliminary school work in Cairo, he studied law at Ohio Northern university. Mell taught school in Sugar Creek and Bath-tps for 10 years. He was interested and active in political and civic enterprises and also had been in the oil business in Ohio and Indiana.
