Lakers Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Columbus for Peter W. Lakers, 2453 Pershing Road, a longtime leader in local civic, business and church affairs. Lakers, 82, died unexpectedly at his home Saturday evening. Services will be held at St. Bonaventure Church with the Rev. John Joseph Lakers OFM, a son of Lakers', officiating. Burial with military honors will be at St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Visitation hours will be held after 2 p.m. Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home. Rosaries will be said by the Third Order Tuesday at 4 p.m., by the parish at 7:30 p.m. and by the Knights of Columbus at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Lakers was born Feb. 23, 1897 at Westphalia, Iowa and attended school in Earling, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War I, receiving a recommendation for Faithful and Loyal Service in 1918 while on the USS Arkansas with the British Navy in European Waters. He was a member of the American Legion for 60 years, serving as service officer for three years. On May 31, 1927, he was married to Frances Agnes Miller at St. Mary's Church in David City. A resident of Columbus since Feb. 15, 1924, Lakers worked for the J.C. Penney Co. for 36 years, managing the store for 31 1/2 years before retiring on July 1, 1957. He was elected to the Consumer Public Power District in 1960, serving for 12 years. He was elected treasurer of Consumers in [Photo of Peter W. Lakers] January of 1961. Lakers also served as a director of Equitable Savings and Loan for 17 years, 12 of those years as vice president. He promoted the Housing Building Project for Columbus in 1946. In 1969, he became president of the Columbus Home Builders. He worked to promote the Columbian Village Apartments, developing a corporation known as Lakers Industries. A member of St. Bonaventure Parish, Lakers served three terms as a church trustee and served as chairman of the church bazaar as well as conducting parish finance drives. He was a past president of the Holy Name Society and was Archdiocesan President for 12 years. He was also a member of the Third Order for 42 years, serving as Prefect. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1918, serving as Grand Knight for two years. He also served on the Knights' State Boys Committee for Youth. He receved the Outstanding Knights of Columbus Member award in 1974. He also started the first basketball team at St. Bonaventure School before a part-time coach was hired. In 1957, Lakers helped to start the Three-County Area Opportunity Center for retarded children. That same year he helped to start the Nebraska Eye Bank, now called Nebraska Eye Sight Conservation. He received the Eyes of Nebraska award from the Assoication of Nebraska Optometry in 1974. A longtime member of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Lakers served as chamber president from 1939-40 and from 1941-42. He served as a director of the chamber in 1928, from 1931-34 and from 1938-41. In 1961, he was awarded the chamber's Outstanding Community Serivce Award and received the Chamber of Commerce Key Committee Award as chairman of Junior Achievement in Columbus. Lakers also helped found the Columbus United Fund. He served as the fund's first president and finance chairman from 1941-43. Active for many years in the Boy and Girl Scouts, Lakers served on the Boy Scout Executive Board beginning in 1930. In 1938, he received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest national award presented by the Boy Scouts. In 1954-55, Lakers was a member and first chairperson of the Development committee to provide Girl Scouting to the Columbus area. He also served as fiance committee chairman on the first board of directors of the Prairie Hills Girl Scout Council, which was chartered in 1956. From 1960-62, he was a member of the Site Selection Committee to build and establish a camp for the council. The ground for the camp, now called Camp Crossed Arrows near Nickerson, was purchased in 1963. In March of this year, Lakers received the "Thanks Badge" from the Prairie Hills Council for his work with the Girl Scouts. Lakers was also a member of the Lions Club since 1928. He was local president, zone chairman, district governor and assistant district governor. In 1958, he received the Local Lions' Loyalty and Devotion Award. Other positions held by Lakers include first president of the Community Chest, past president of the Friends of Music and past chairman of the Platte County 4-H Fair. Lakers is survived by one daughter, Mrs. A.W. (Eleanor) Alexander of Englishtown, N.J.; three sons, Paul Lakers of London, England, the Rev. John Joseph Lakers of Quincy, Ill. and Tom Lakers of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Leone and Ruth; 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 9, 1978, a son, Robert, three brothers and one sister.
