She was 83. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. John Joseph Lakers at St. Bonaventures Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. The body now lies in state at McKown Funeral Home where a Rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. today by the 3rd Order of St. Francis and Franciscan Missionary Union, a Scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. and an 8 p.m. Rosary by Catholic Daughters of America. Mrs. Lakers was born April 4, 1895 at David City, Neb., to August Miller and Nora Considine. She is a graduate of Kearney Teacher’s College. She married Peter William Lakers May 31, 1927 in St. Marys at David City where she lived. After her marriage, she and Mr. Lakers have since lived in Columbus. She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary; Girl Scouts of which she conducted two 1-week summer camps, and was the first den mother in Columbus for the Cub Scouts. She received the Good Neighbor Award from Ak-Sar-Ben; Service to Mankind Award from Sertoma, and was affiliated with the First Order of St. Francis. She was a member and past regent of the Catholic Daughters of America; a member of the third Order of St. Francis. In 1942 Mrs. Lakers organized the Franciscan Missionary Union and started making vestments and expanded to clothes for men, women and children in mission areas. Many stores in Columbus contributed clothing for the missions through this group. In the 36 years, the FMU involved an average of 100 women and shipped an average of 10,000 pounds of clothing a year to 13 missions in South American [sic] and to as many in the United States. She is survived by her husband of Columbus; children Paul, London, Eng., Mrs. A.W. (Eleanor) Alexander, Englishtown, N.J.; Fr. John Joseph, Quincy Ill., and Thomas, Knoxville, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Anthony Miller, Omaha; a sister, Mrs. Irene Glantz, Kansas City, Mo. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert. The family request that memorials be given to the Franciscan Missionary Union or the Charity of their choice.
