Howard was born on November 12, 1926 in Forsyth, MT to Joe R. and Emma (Scheidt) Quinlan. He grew up on the family ranch on Smith Creek where he attended grade school. He attended high school in Forsyth, MT. Howard’s young life was full of adventures with his brothers and sisters, always including horses and cattle. Howard enlisted in the United States Army during World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 1, 1947 after receiving the WWII victory medal and the army of occupation medal. He returned to the family ranch on Smith Creek where he made his home on the family ranch. He married Merry Montana Brauer on August 22, 1954. To this marriage they had two children: Howard Jr. and Mary Jo. Ranching was Howard’s life and he loved doing so. Howard worked various ranch jobs until he started working for the City of Forsyth. After more than 30 years, he retired in 1992 and then doubled his cattle herd. He loved team roping, riding any bucking stock, spoiling his cows, riding horses, and attending rodeos. Howard was very instrumental in starting the Forsyth Youth Rodeo Club in the 1970’s and he was a 4-H leader for many years. He loved having his grandchildren along when he drove his team of goats pulling a wagon, and brought them into town for parades. Howard enjoyed taking his grandkids to compete in rodeos, trailing cows, and branding with them. Camping trips were often an adventure with the roaring fires Howard would build. He was an avid gardener as well as an agate collector. He could often be found at the Fairgrounds helping out, especially during fair time. Howard was a man of few words and went about doing things in a quiet way. Howard is survived by his wife Merry of 62 years; his children: Howard Jr. (Susan) Quinlan, Mary Jo (Jerry McDaniel) Turner; his brothers: Robert (Georgie) Quinlan and Donald (Virginia) Quinlan; his sister Marie Reichert; sister in laws Carol Quinlan and Joanne Quinlan; brother-in-law Roger Brauer; grandchildren: Dusty (Joe) Schiffer, Dusten Turner, Katie Quinlan, Rusty Turner, Emily Quinlan, SrA Jacob Quinlan USAF and Kelly McDaniel; and great grandchildren: Cassy, Joseph and Andrew Schiffer, Shaylee Turner and Kaylee Quinlan. Howard is preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Arden Quinlan, Marvin Quinlan and Joseph Quinlan; sister Josephine Cory; brother-in-law John Brauer; and sister-in-law Edith Brauer. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Forsyth. Interment will follow in the Forsyth Cemetery, in Forsyth, MT. Memorials in Howard’s honor may be made out to the family to go towards a memorial bench to be placed at the Rosebud County Fair Grounds.
